Do you prefer left turn yield on green or left turn on green arrow only?

In Virginia it seems most of the left turn lights are turn on green arrow only which to me is a complete waste of time since you could be turning left if it was a left turn yield on green. Also it seems to slow traffic a lot more since you have to stop traffic for left turn arrows. When I was in southern Cali last week it seemed there were no left turn green arrows at all and it was only left turn yield on green. The only way to turn seemed to be right when the light turned yellow or red and it seemed like all the cars in the area knew this and would yield to those that were turning left on a red light. I dont know the accidents this would cause with people turning left on red but it seemed to work well there since everyone seemed to know that cars basically could only turn left right when the light switched.

In Texas it seems like a blend of the two with both left turn yield on green and green arrows. This seems to me the best way. I dont know why here in Virginia most of the lights are no left turn on green. Are the drivers here that incompetent that they cant yield to oncoming traffic on green when turning left?

It's a mix of the two here in MI. I prefer arrows, since it can be pretty tough to turn left during rush hour without a dedicated signal.

Left turn without an arrow can be awful if you have to wait for the whole light to cycle so that you can turn on yellow - hoping that somebody isn't timing lights and accidentally broadsides you as you turn.

Left turn only on green arrow can be awful at an empty intersection.

Third option FTW !

Most of the areas close to downtown Chicago have no turn arrows.

Why, I have no idea. We really could use them at the intersections where diagonal streets meet major East-West and North-South streets (effectively a six way intersection with no turn signals). It can be a real clusterfvck if there is much traffic.

In the Pheonix Metro area, most intersections (and pretty much all major street intersections) have a green arrow. However less than half of them are left turn on green arrow only, which is incredibly nice.

It makes driving somewhere on non-rush hour times very easy, and makes rush hour a bit more bearable.

I also hate the 'yeild on green' rather than yield on flashing red

What is yield on flashing red. We don't have that in California. Flashing red is the same as a stop sign here.
