When I was in dorms in college their desks didn't really allow for you to have one under/beside it so I had it on top. Any other place always below.

Under. Use to be on and I shudder thinking back - that was the time of Diablo II and CD constantly spinning required at ear level: FML.

I got a P183 to muffle some of the noise and use low speed fans. It's worked for the most part.

What a bitch it is whenever I have to plug/unplug things though.

Full tower, with my volume control on top of it, so it needs to be where I can reach it. Under my desk.

My desk has a cutout for a desktop, so I use that. The last place I lived, no cut-out, so I kept it next to the desk. When I lived at home, I only had a table, so I kept it on top.

Mine sits on a file cabinet next to my desk. Perfect height to access optical drives, USB ports, etc. It's also as quiet as an air cooled system can be, so I'm good.

I have two desktops on either side of my desk and they are both 6 inches off the floor. I would never put them directly on the floor plus I have a cat who likes to shed so I don't need my tower acting like a vacuum cleaner.

I had my huge ass CM Cosmos case on my desk for 3 years. Recently I did a new build and finally redid all the cabling with zip ties etc. Now it sits under the desk and I like it a hell of a lot more.

On top of my desk. I wanna see and marvel at what I built. Having it on the floor increases dust and I built my machine for silence so the noise is not a problem.

I got no room on my desk for my 58-lb machine. It lives in a little cubby under the desk.

I don't understand why people would ever put a tower mainframe on top of a desk. They belong underneath a desk, hidden from view.

Why would you want a noisey device sitting close to your face and your screen?

Do you commit this heinous act?
My noisey device puts out 18db. There be mo dust on floor than on desk.

On top of my desk so the cat can't get to it, damn little fur-ball.

I have it on my desk. Putting it under means it is a pain in the arse when you want to upgrade or fix something.

On top. No space underneath and too dusty anyways. Plus the computer is quite silent and it's easier to unplug stuff on top. Also heat rises and I like to look at my baby.

On top right now because mouse and keyboard makers refuse to realize that short cords are not ideal.
Also when it was on the floor I often would kick it when moving my feet under the desk, not good for hard drive lifespan.

On top, just about dead silent. One 120mm fan on the cpu turning at 500 rpm. No fan on ps or vid card.

on top. I always felt like it got too dusty inside when it was on the floor and I was always kicking it accidentally... plus it's more convenient for plugging peripherals/usb hd's in and out

Mine is under the desk, but still visible. I had CCFL lights in it when clear side panels were all the rage. There's just no room for it on top. As for noise, it's pretty quiet unless I'm gaming or got Folding@Home running. The fans from the twin GPUs are the main culprit.

My computer tower sits inside of my office desk, since that's how it was designed to work. It's not the best design for airflow, though... I needed to cut out a big hole in the back of the desk to keep it from overheating.

On top, windowed case so it looks fairly cool and watercooled so it's fairly quiet. If I'm not gaming i can turn down the fans and it's essentially silent.

OP, should I put this on the floor?

(It is on a small bookcase next to my desk.)
