On some levels I relate to him, coming from a multicultural family, but I don't like him. He is laying the Hope and Change hype too thick, and substance too thin for me. He just strikes me as more of a self promoter than someone who is passionate about issues and policies.
I think that's a common mistake, to judge politicians this way.
They have to win an election, and you have to look at the voters to see what that means.
While you may like them to just talk substance, they *don't stand a chance to win* if they do, because the voters don't respond to that.
YOU have to be a little more sophisticated and look for the politician who represents you, but give them slack on how they campaign to get elected, given imperfect voters.
If you go back and look at your favorite president in the last century, at best you will find them campaigning with the sort of 'empty' campaigning you see with Obama et al.
I remember watching old ads of one of the presidents I think was highly substantive, JFK, and seeing the same sort of Obama-like nonsense. It was filled with empty sloganeering, a couple catch phrases, often music. Other campaigns are as bad or worse, the Willie Horton ad for example is even worse.
You don't need to look at much more than the following to get my point. Would you say you turned against JFK the way you turned against Obama ocer this ad?
