For your doctor Strangelove and FMJ I don't thnk you will find them in widescreen since Kubrick didn't want Widescreen.

They came with the "edited to fit your screen" deal, so there must be a widescreen copy somewhere.

I only buy widescreen and will only watch it if it's free. I used to hate WS but now I LOVE it!

If I'm not wrong, I think all the Kubrick films are FS. CW Org and The Shinning are FS too. Could be the studios holding out, but I doubt it.

Watching a movie shot not shot in 4:3 is retarded. Taking a 2.33:1 and hacking it down to 4:3 is tragedy. You'd rather miss half the camera angle than have a coupla black bars? Feels like tunnel vision to me. Much of the really interesting images often occur at the edges.

Boo 4:3 and hooray for my 16:9 HD set

Looking at my FMJ it definitely says that it has been reformatted. There must be a widescreen copy somewhere. It would be worth it to me to replace mine with it too.

edit: I've posted a total of 3 typos previous to today here, why have I posted at least 5 today????

I can't even tell any difference....

My TV is fairly small (27"?) so Widescreen black bars makes it even smaller...

On my 100 inch widescreen movies look sweet regardless. That said I only will watch widescreen movies on it, if somebody brings me a 4x3 ratio movie i lecture them on why they never should purchase a full screen version again. Most people dont even know theres a difference and just pick up the first one they see.

The thing about Dr. Strangelove was that it was shot in multiple aspect ratios, so for the widescreen version they had to tweek it a bit, and have the movie change resolutions to fit the ratio. It's possible that some of his other movies have the same issue.

Original Aspect Ratio, it's not about more image or less image, it's about the right image.

As far the Kubric stuff goes, he shot his movies as 1.33:1. They were shown in theaters incorrectly as widescreen. I want to see the movie the director intended me to see.

Also from imdb.com:

Almost always shot his films in the standard 1.33:1 ratio. The exceptions were: Spartacus, in Panavision, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, in Cinerama. Much of his films consist of wide-angle shots that give the impression of a wide-screen movie, wide up-and-down as well as wide sideways. From the Killing onward, his films looked increasingly odder, bigger, and more properly viewed from the rows closer to the screen.

OAR for me too, though I prefer 16:9 over both 2.35:1 and 4:3.

I've got a 4:3 TV so either way is fine for me. I must say that I would much rather watch widescreen on a normal TV than fullscreen on a widescreen TV.

given the choice between full screen and wide screen, I'll take wide screen... but if a movie was only availible in full screen, I'll take what I can get (like Fellowship and Two Towers during the weekend that RotK premiered, which were only availible on full-screen VHS, in Spanish, no less).

If the movie isn't made in widescreen, I'll put up with full screen. If both versions are available, I have to have the widescreen. Full screen stinks. I hate pan and scan!
