Hey! For all of us old-timers that remember Robotech back in the 80s - the DVDs are being released. I just picked mine up at Amazon:

Robotech DVD (this is the boxed set with the first 2 DVDs and the bonus material DVD) - $34.99 (retails at $45).
Add any book, DVD, CD to bring the total up to $45. Use the coupon that is available elsewhere for $5 off of $45 (I got the 14.95 Patriot DVD). With 2 books, DVDs, or CDs, you get free standard shipping.

My total (Robotech boxed set plus Patriot) was $43.70 (no tax or shipping). Not burning hot - but I wanted both these anyway. It also gave me a chance to use up some of my Amazon GCs.

Edit 6/22 - 800.com has them in stock for $29.94 (thanks Sekser), $27.99 at Buy.com (on backorder - thanks Mday/linster), Best Buy B&M, etc. There's a $5 off $50 at Buy.com. Couldn't find anything on 800.com, etc.

I just ordered mine from there last night, too bad ULN is back ordered on these as they have the boxset for 25 bucks. I used the 5 off 30 coupon sent to me and got the set for 32 dollars. Not a bad price for 12 episodes and a bonus disc. Now if only their Tenchi Muyo Ultimate would drop in price...

Also, the first two discs that are in the boxset are available for 11.99 each as well.

The books were much better than the cartoon of it. I read all the regular series books, read most of the sentinels and all those end of something books

If you guys are gonna buy the DVD"s you should use that "share the love" deal where if ppl buy the same things as you they get 10% and you get 10% credit. I'm not planning to buy them, but go to your accounts and click on manage share the love mail or something like that.

the complete set for $250 is NOT Robotech, but the original Japanese Macross series, remastered for DVD. Most serious anime fans seem to prefer this one over the Robotech release. It's supposed to be out late summer, and the publisher claims there have been nearly 15,000 pre-orders. Of course, these sign-ups are NOT binding, but on paper, that's still well over $3 million in pre-order revenue.

Btw, Fry's NorCal has each of the 1st two Robotech DVD releases for $9.99 through the end of today. That's a pretty good price (list is $15) if you don't want the box set. I'm not sure if any other retailers would carry this title for a PM.

Mine has already shipped from Amazon as a pre-order.

The pre-order at Robotech.com is for the original Macross anime (NOT the Macross saga of Robotech). It's remastered animation, but isn't part of the Robotech continuity.

(oops - manly beat me to it)

You can get the individual DVDs for cheaper. 1&2 (which are contained in boxed set 1) are only $26 together, but I wanted the bonus stuff...

two questions...

1) are the original macross dvds going to be released separately and in the boxed set, or only the boxed set? will it include subtitles, since everything will be in japanese? also - what exactly was remastered? i read that for the robotech release, there was no way to get the original actors to redo the voices, and no way to redo the soundtrack in surround, and that its basically digitized VHS. so what have they remastered for the macross release?

2) are the robotech releases anything like the VHS tapes that were released a few years back? those were *seriously* edited in which TONS of footage was removed from what i remembered seeing when i was a kid (let alone looking through the Art books and noticing what was removed).

i just hate to get these dvd's and then kick myself in the head wanting the macross set when it is released. however, i just cant fork out $250 right now, but i can spend $40 for the set from amazon...and i would like to see that bonus footage at some point in time.

thx - sorry for all the Q's, but i just want to get the right thing from the beginning. robotech / macross = my childhood. why not relive it right?

Wondering, what exactly is the difference between Robotech and Macross? Macross (fansubbed, NOT robotech) was the first anime I ever saw about 6 or 7 years ago, and I'm really curious . . .

Macross is the original anime. It has spawned many versions in Japan. In the 1980s, an American company decided to produce a TV cartoon based on it, but Macross didn't have enough episodes for a full run. They took the animation from Macross and 2 other (unrelated) animes and produced one extended story.

The first series of Robotech is the Macross saga. It is the same animation as Macross. The dialogue and story are different (sometimes vastly different). The 2nd saga is Southern Cross. It uses the animation from xxxxx (can't remember the original - something like Super Dimensinal Fortress something). It continues the Robotech story with the next generation from the Macross saga. The last piece is Next Generation. It is based on the Mospeada anime.

The characters in the 3 sagas are loosely tied to each other. Each piece is basically independent of the others.

In my opinion (most will probably disagree), Robotech as a whole is better than the originals. The stories are compelling, and it's very interesting to see the story unfold across the generations.

Alphasilk,

There are 6 episodes per DVD. Macross saga is something like 42 episodes (so 7 DVDs). Southern Cross is ~20 (so 3-4 more). Next generation is ~20 (so 3-4 more).

I'd guess they'll have 6-8 boxed sets to cover the whole story line.

just get it at best buy..they have have it for 34.99 also..plus you can use that 10% coupon to save a couple buck..and dont have to pay..or wait for shipping.

(woops..didnt see ucb2001's earlier post)

i was going to get this set..but 34.99 for 12 eps just didnt seem worth it..you can order the dvds for 11.99 online each..and not have to pay 10 bucks just for the 3rd dvd of stuff i dont care about. (making of scenes..interviews..stuff normal dvds include for free)

I am looking to get a review this box set but I can't find any. Has anyone watched the movies from the box set? Is it as good as Akira?

don't forget that the $35 includes a bonus DVD with extra stuff - albeit not much, but as a fan i'm willing to pay for it.

i picked up the amazon deal - 34.99 + a kid606 CD for 10.97. total was almost exactly 40.00 shipped. seems worth it to me!

Here is a good review of the first DVD.

I just went to Fry's in Fountain Valley and they have the boxed set on sale for $29.99. That beats the Amazon.com and Best Buy price.

This is $27.99 at Buy.com, although it is "On Order". Robotech was the greatest. I remember waking up at 6AM just to watch it when I was a kid.

I order it from buy.com on Tuesday when it was on order and it was shipped on Wednesday, I guest you can't trust the availability status very much. The total is ~$30.
