Hmmm. I suppose so. Some people have it in them to get a lot of shit done. He was one of them. That's worth respecting.

Respect, yes. Like, no.

There's very little about Apple and Jobs I like, but you gotta give him credit. If anyone accomplished 10% in their respective careers that Jobs did in his, it would still be an impressive achievement.

He's up there with Bill Gates and Warren Buffet as one of the most iconic businessmen of the last 30 years. The amount of ass kicking that Apple has done in the last 10 years under his watch was incredible.

Do You Respect Steve Jobs?

I respect him but I think he was ridiculously OCD.

While it's sad he's dead he made gadgets. He was very good at it, and even better at hyping them. However, people are acting like it's going to destroy their lives now that he's gone. Honestly, would their lives be tangibly worse if they never got their iPod/iPad/Mac/iDoohickey?

There are plenty of people that die each day that saved a large number of people's lives, improved the quality of their lives, or helped give them the freedom to live their lives as they chose. Many of these people pass away without much notice at all. I think it's a sad statement about how much we have consumerism ingrained into our culture that we mourn the death of a maker and promoter of gadgets more than someone that really changed people's lives.

I hate everything Apple, but that doesn't diminish their accomplishments.

Have you used an Apple device built in the last 5 years? I just don't understand some peoples hatred of a company. I admittedly used to have the same opinion as you. But after using iPhones, iPods, iPods and the recent Macbooks I've changed my tune. They really are incredibly well built devices that do their respective jobs very well and with little drama.

I don't like the obsessive control they have over the products, and the form over function design approach. You do it Apple's way, or you don't do it, so I don't do it.

I respect how he was able to turn Apple around. Apple once again became a powerhouse, however, their legal tactics to stay on top became almost as slimy of Microsoft's were in the 90's.

I'm not sure how much of that was Jobs, and how much of it was Apple's legal team. Only time will tell, I guess. He certainly didn't do much to stop the parade of senseless patent lawsuits against it's competitors, though.

Nope. I don't rate very highly the ability to deceive idiots.
If you have the ability to get a lot of people to call your 1-900 psychic hotline, it's not going to wow me with your contribution to humanity.

Yes, I do respect him as an innovator and for how far he managed to bring Apple.

But like most others is this thread so far, I don't particularly like him. He was a showmanist and played just as much on the marketing aspect. Considering how long he was fighting pancreatic cancer, his death wasn't particularly shocking, only his longevity. While the internet has been plastered with mourning his death and--in some cases--hero worship, I haven't felt a need to indulge in it (this being my only words about it, period).

If you can name one person to credit the advent of the Information Age, who would it be?

Steve Jobs is up there, no?

Respect, yes. Like, no. There have been thousands of discussions on this already.
There are CEO's out there doing impressive feats as well, that are also nice people.

I'd agree with you if all he did was that PC vs MAC commercial... but he did far more than just deceive people.

I suggest you watch PBS Triumph of the Nerds. It tells the story of how apple started. Steve Jobs was a hobbyist programmer and a well spoken businessman who met up with a nerdy, talented hardware guru. They combined forces to bring the personal computer to the masses. Before them, PCs were confined to hobbyists who had to buy multiple parts and assemble them together.

I've used a few iPods and just can't get used to the controls really from an iTunes perspective.

Back then the PC (IBM) killed them, they were never as mainstream as the PC and always on the brink of failure.
