Do you run Linux based servers at home?

I've been wanting to get into Linux, but really don't know how to. I have a few O'Reilly Linux books, and want to set up some servers and such. I have build a workstation machine using Red Hat, but besides surfing the net, I really don't know what else to do on it. I have not very UNIX/Linux literate, so Linux is pretty much new to me.

Do any of you run Linux servers in your home LAN? If you do, what kind of server (file, print, DNS?) do you run? What version of Linux do you use? Sorry for the abundance of questions, just would like to get more familiar with Linux, and want to find ways to use Linux in my home LAN.

I was running Debian on a headless Dell P166MMX for a few months. This was my MP3 server, which could stream music across the 'net (when I am at work) or play files locally via S/PDIF to my home stereo. PHP and MySQL on the backend and the web on the frontend.

Although I still have Linux on a removeable hard drive, I have since gone to XP for the same purpose, but XP also supports my scanner and printer much more easily than Linux. The only problem is that the machine needs much more horsepower now (hoping to go with a Celeron @550 soon).

I'd like to be able to run Linux as my server, but I'm having too many headaches with Samba. Once I learn enough about Samba, I think I'll switch to Linux. Currently, my Win2k server runs Apache 2.0, BulletFTP server, local shares and CS server. All of that would work just fine on Linux, if I could only get Samba going exactly the way I want.

I've been running a Linux server on and off for aout a year. (hosed it several months ago & waited until I built a new machine to start over)

It runs RH 7.2, Apache, DNS, Sendmail, I have SAMBA set up but since only one other PC in the house runs windoze occasionaly it doesn't get used much.

I had NFS set up to share files to the other PC's on my net but haven't really tweaked it to get it as good as it should be.

I have used SSH to log in from work to check my mail as well as run occasional X sessions remotely using Cgywin & VNC just because I can.

vash let me know what your problems are with SAMBA & I will try to help out.

My web server is currently running Mandrake 8.0, but I'm in the process of switching it over to OpenBSD 3.0.

Well I read most people use routing stuff.

Is it possible someone tell me how to do the following ?

I installed a clean copy of latest vmware in my suse8 box... but the allforwarding thing doesn;t work..

I have the following configuration:

======== |=================
* modem * <---- Linux box ----->| My windows VMachine |
======== |=================

HOST ONLY CONFIGURATION !

the linux doesn't forward the packets from the VM OS 'vmnet1' to the modem 'ppp0'

can you please remind me the 'iptables' commnads the I have to use for that kind of forwarding ?

I used some commands that I knew but nothing.. The network between those two OS works, samba works too, and can browsed by the windowsOS.

I have done it many times before but I don't remember the command....

I remember that I have to set my Vmachine to have gateway the virtual IP of the Host,and the DNS same as the Host machine..

Thanks for any help... can you forward it to -> nrasidakis@hotmail.com

Cheers.

i run a web/ftp/ssh/samba/nat linux box. its based on gentoo with some modifications and some extensive iptables scripting. its a dual celeron 500s on a bp6 and has my 60 gb main fileshare drive. its been bullet proof for a while.

ive ran debian woody (w/ xfs of course) for a while until i found gentoo. it also ran slackware for a while.

ive been intending to install openbsd on my pentium pro, maybe then ill use it as my IP/NAT box.

I'm playing with a p120 with 64 megs of ram and Redhad 7.3. X mode sucks, but the command line is still great.
