I spend so much time at work that the people I work with have become some of my closest friends. I admit that when of them fucks up, I have never reported any of their ill doings. Their is definitely a limit to what I will turn a blind eye to, but at the moment I find it hard to imagine just what.

As a kid, I grew up in a culture were snitches are not looked at too kindly. The 'ol boys club mentality is something I find hard to shake.

How do you guys deal with such situations at work?

Never have, it would have be something that either fucked me over or seriously alters the company in one way or another.

Where I work they would be likely to report themselves before it became a real problem.
Any mistake in almost anything we do costs a lot of time at best, and lives at worst.

Never have and Never will.

If it is a safety issue or something that effects everyone , I confront the person one on one.
Which is easy to do when you get along with others well enough to have mutual respect for each others opinions/views.

No need to "snitch" and possibly have someone lose their job/livelihood when mature/adult employees are smart enough to work things out themselves without sending a "bad kid" to the "principals office".

Would you snitch on a close colleague that pulled a "Sandusky"

Of course,in a heartbeat.
That is a SERIOUS offense, that thankfully isn't common enough to be thought of when referring to snitching.
Nobody would consider that snitching, its considered justice and morality.

anything illegal i would immediately. in terms of screwing up their job, ill approach them first, but usually ill do something about since it ultimately will probably create more work for me. its more about preserving my sanity than hurting anyone else.

I have never heard an honest man call someone a snitch.

Exactly. I don't give two shits about this mob mentality. If you do something illegal or harmful, out the door your ass goes. I don't have friends at work, only coworkers.

if it affects the customer negatively, hell yes.

if its just coming in late or taking a long break, hell no.

For something like that, I'd roll over in a heartbeat and there'd be no stopping me if the boss, boss' boss, boss' boss' boss, etc. didn't act on it.

Otherwise, if it were serious enough, I'd talk to the person myself to straighten them out. I'm direct like that.

I used to cover mistakes made by other developers on my team before I realized that it was all negatively affecting me; as generally the most senior person (though not in a managerial role), other departments came to view me as the person to talk to in order to fix mistakes others made, unfairly adding work (and negative perception) for me.

Now if X makes a mistake, I say X made a mistake - no more "we're looking into it" or "we made a mistake". I think utter honesty makes for much better trust between we developers and outside departments, and the developer gets a sense of personal responsibility for his errors.
