I still like the concept of the slow carb diet. You basically have a list of foods you eat and put them in different combinations to make meals. The result is a refined grocery list that allows you to do bulk buys and portion control makes a pound of organic chicken or grass fed beef last for multiple meals.

Most of the diet consists of beans, cottage cheese, greens, select proteins, etc... Despite the higher costs of the individual ingredients, many are nutritious fillers that can stretch the budget nicely.

I eat a very high protein almost no carb diet and 2,000 calories a day.

I mostly eat mass amounts of eggs, fresh veggies, tofu, chicken breasts, and tuna. It's pretty samey, but compared to soylent, is miles above it in taste.

This also gives me energy to lift heavy on weekdays and run 10K's on weekends. Eating on 35-40 dollars a week is actually really easy and extremely nutritious.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I can see that. Most of that stuff is reasonably priced. I've done something similar before and the chicken is the thing I can't stick with for too long. But I'm not a huge chicken person.

I got into making my own meals a little lately. I need to do it more. It's way healthier and cheaper than I used to eat.

I make a huge pot of soup and eat a huge bowl once a day. It's almost thick enough to eat on a plate. I'll experiment with more ingredients or different styles. Easy as heck to make. Dump it all in, heat for 20 minutes, eat.

can of:

Peas
corn
black beans
tuna

Half a box of whole grain noodles
Some rice
Bullion cubes or broth

Each of those are a little over a $1 each or $1.50 or so.

Little pepper too.

Lasts about a week. I guess. So 7 meals for pretty dang cheap. $10 - $14 for all that?

But I like the soylant idea too. Not knocking it. Seems still really fair priced to me and no hassle. And healthy. But if you really wanted to scrimp you can definitely eat for less. When the stuff easier to buy and no wait I'll probably be buying some.

Wow, that's amazing! Just chicken & tuna for one week costs over $40 in my area!

Bulk man. I buy everything in as large as portions I can possibly find.

If you want to eat tons of variety of foods, sure it will be expensive, but because I limit myself to a very specific subsection of foods that I know will keep me alive/healthy and taste reasonably good, I can massively reduce my food cost.

animals are too tasty. this is ridiculous.

I read a long article on these dudes a year ago. Creator is a bit nuts and full of grand hallucinations.

I think it's a fine idea as a dietary supplement for some percentage of meals, but making this your only food source is just...I dunno...soulless. The dude got the idea because he thought eating was the biggest waste of his time. If only he could eliminate all the time spent eating, he could do more important things like film himself Go-Proing on skateboards or something. seriously--he wasn't in it for the health.

I dunno, I just don't trust such grand proclamations like: "everyone must change their life habits because this x thing is a waste of your time."

....and that thing is eating and actually enjoying food. These are hipster freaks living in their little LA bachelor pad telling me that I should not enjoy food. fuck them.

OH--also, this stuff makes you fart...A LOT. And these aren't just any farts. Apparently you spend the first 3-7 weeks on this diet farting all day long, every day, with these uniquely sour and rancid farts. I'd advise that anyone who wants to get into this stupid stuff, to consider the impact that uncontrollable farts for 3 or more straight weeks may have on your professional and social life.

Yeah, I pretty much do my bulk shopping at Sam's Club (like a Costco) - big bags of frozen chicken, tuna can packs, etc.. I found some great plastic trays for homemade TV dinners, thread here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2336038

I like to do a bulk cook & then make a bunch of different frozen dinners - meatloaf, grilled chicken, etc. with misc. veggies. It's great for convenience & eating healthy! I would go with Soylent if I didn't have food allergies (corn, wheat, etc.) so unfortunately the powder mix is out for me.

There's no rule about eating 90 or 100% of your meals this way. When I get around to trying this, I'll mostly use it as a cheap breakfast shake, or a quick lunch.

Also there are recipes out there for *-allergen-free powder, though I don't know how many of those can be bought premade.

I will say that some of the home-made soylents might be right up my alley. I just would take out a majority of the sugar and up the protein a good amount.

5 dollars a day for 1800 calories seems doable.

Yeah, mine in particular is super difficult. I can't do grains, which includes corn, which basically everything is made out of haha. The catch with corn is that it's a full allergy to all components, so no matter how much you refine it, you still react to it if the original ingredient source is corn. Like with my gluten allergy, I can handle vinegar because the gluten has been distilled out of it, but with corn, even if you remove the corn protein & the corn gluten, you still react because it's an "all components" allergy. Right now they're using corn maltodextrin, although in the early trials they apparently used tapioca maltodextrin. I haven't cared enough to dig into a DIY route because corn has about 60 product names (citric acid, maltodextrin, ascorbic acid, etc.) & it's a super pain to trial them individually because I get sick if I eat it. Plus, you know, I love food

That's a small fortune where I live though. Can't afford it

Well sure...but if your choice for breakfast is a Starbucks jumbo caffeine-sugar hit with a Burger King breakfast sandwich, or a bland shake that gives you 100% of your nutritional requirements for under five bucks, which is a better choice health-wise?

It's no so much about replacing food as it is replacing convenience options. And most people will still do like a regular dinner with it. That way you whip up a shake in the blender before you run out the door, and pour the extra into a thermos for lunch, and you're set until you get home for dinner. Easy peasy.

I decided to order up the stuff for one of the DIY recipes. Decided to give this one a shot:
People Chow 3.0.1 - Tortilla Perfection

I should get everything tonight (Amazon same day delivery is awesome btw).

This won't be a full on replacement for all of my meals, but I'm planning on using it for breakfast and most likely many lunches. I'll also use it to replace some dinners depending how it goes. I was able to get everything for just over $200 including a scale to measure out the right amounts. I've got enough for about 3 weeks worth of soylent alone, with protein powder being the only thing I'll run out of. Another $60 for another 3 weeks.

If it works out it'll be roughly $3.70ish (rough estimation) per meal. I'll work out official numbers later on after work, plus what it would cost if I continued on with the ingredients I've got.

Outside of breakfast or lunch one of the biggest attractions for me is that I've been trying to eat healthier (I don't eat terrible) but I also don't like cleaning dishes and spending much time cooking. I also find it hard sometimes to find time to cook and clean when there are other things I want to do. My hope is that I spend 10-15 minutes mixing a couple days worth of Soylent every few nights (maybe nightly) and am able to not have to worry about eating. While I like the taste of food I find it to be a hassle at times and have skipped meals because I didn't want to cook chicken or make a tuna sandwich or such. Hopefully this helps with that.

I'll track it and post up my results if anyone is interested. I've been looking at trying this stuff out as it fits what I want perfectly from food, but I've been too impatient to try the official stuff and hadn't taken the time to research what I would need and where I could get it from.
