Do you spit on the ground and why?

I only do it if I'm sick and I have a nasty buildup in the back of my throat. I try to get it in a trash can or something. My friend, however, does it constantly. He has been a swimmer most of his life, and he told me that all the chlorine has eroded his sinuses and so he has to constantly hock loogies.

Exactly. Spitting is a part of the immune system. It is unhealthy to bypass it. If you swallow spit, you can get tuberculosis (and other such things). It's supposed to be disgusting, you prude. It's excrement, do not swallow it.

I only spit when I'm sick and sometimes when I'm running. Aren't humans designed to swallow it though? The mucus catches all those diseased particles and then the mucus slides into the stomach to be destroyed by the hydrochloric acid.

Reasons I might spit or "hock a loogie":

1) I've been sick and have crap stuck in my throat that I'd REALLY rather not swallow
2) I've been running (usually more than a mile or two) and have a similar problem to #1
3) I've just finished watching the newest Rob Schneider movie
