Do you still use obsolete technology?

I guess my computer is getting to that point. But I still use my stereo to play the radio in my living room. I always get a kick out of telling my nephews to put the radio on. They all get confused with all the buttons and knobs on it. It amuses me.

My home computer is 11 years old. The main computing machine I use at work is 25 year old tech, and my other gear is 20 years old. You tell me.

Yeah I do but why would I replace it if it's not broken right? I mean if it still works then I use it. My LG Cosmos 2 is a great example because it still works great.

Typing this on an old Dell Precision M6300 right now. Works for my use. I want to get a Latitude next.

I have a standard touch tone phone in addition to the cordless DECT 6.0 encrypted phone in case the power goes out.

My stereo speakers are over 50 years old and to my ear still sound good. They are custom built large cubes, part of a set of 8 for my dad's early 60s stereo gear. One held a turntable, reel to reel etc. They have the original Phillips 12" 3 way speakers in them.

And I bet they sound better than my Logitech "THX certified" Z-5300 5.1 speakers of which I messed some up. I have to buy some replacement satellites. Last time I crank the volume to max.

I have a land line and an answering machine. The phone and answering machine are both over twenty years old. I bought a new phone/answering machine this very day. It has those new fangled cordless handsets. Not sure how I feel about that.

I have a plain old stereo, 2.0, with a CD player. Apparently, this streaming thing is a thing now and I should be doing that instead. Also, somewhere along the line stereos picked up a decimal place.

My washing machine has neither display nor ground effects. Ground effects is an obsolete term.

My drill press predates rock and roll and has but one speed.

I occasionally bang stuff with rocks.

Let's see..I just kicked AT&T on the office line. My fax or alarm don't work now.

Streaming....no idea.

+1 for the washer. Damned "touch" range hood has started acting up.

Drill press? 1950 King Sealy sold by Sears. Table saw, same,

Rocks? I got a chunk of chert. Does that count?

I have a server from around 2008 running Fedora Core 9 still chugging along, if that counts. My UPS has failed me twice in the past few years where it trips too slow and it takes out a few servers, but this one always stays up. 1240 days of up time. Meanwhile I'm actually right now in the process of dealing with lot of database corruption on some newer servers that did not survive a recent power bump... old stuff is sometimes better.

I still own a VCR and a CRT, though they arn't hooked up. I do have a land line phone though, but been thinking of canceling it as if I cancel that and TV I will save a decent chunk of money on my bill. I just keep forgetting to actually call to get that done.

There's nothing obsolete about using a widget that serves its purpose instead of being a mouse on a treadmill. Buy what you need. Don't let idiots and marketing change that.

There's a lot of people that think having the latest and greatest is the best. Take Windows 10 for example. HAHA Still a happy Win 7 user here and when the time comes I'm actually FORCED to use that fuckitry due to hardware incompatibility, I'll use Pfsense and block all of M$'s ASNs, and of course use Shutup 10. Of course by the time I do use 10 there will be a better program. Pretty damn unreal you have to run a program just to take back control of your own damn computer.

Anyway... The same can be applied to smartphones. Who in their right mind pays over $800 for a flipping phone?! My phone budget is $250 and no more. And even that is insane. In fact, my next phone purchase will be a Samsung S7.

In another instance was my computer. I just built a new computer last May shown in my Sig. The last computer was a Q6600. It served its purpose. I mean, the only games I play are old games like BF2 with the AIX mod, FSX, COD, BFBC2, and other older FPS's. I'm quite content with the games I have now, and no, I don't want steam. I prefer physical media. Although, I do want to purchase GTA V. I'll do that when I upgrade my GPU.

Shit, we had this same discussion in 2013. Getting old sucks.
That's the part about being a lifer that no one talks about....having the same conversations over and over again. Year after year decade after decade. Sometimes it's with the same people sometimes it isn't but in the end it's always the same.

You perfectly described a padded room.

What's wrong with padded rooms? It would hurt less when I bang my head against the wall from reading what some on ATOT write.
