texting is great for situations where you can't talk, or only need to make a simple statement. It's faster to text "meet me @ library @ 2" than it is to call, wait for answer or voicemail, and then leave a message or have a conversation about it.

Texts are good for sending quick bits of info to large numbers of people (eg when to show up to a party) or for just seeing who is free.

I'm so cheap that I'll hop on verizons website to send a text, maybe a couple a year for those times a call just isn't appropriate. I hate receiving them as it adds to the phone bill.

Yes, I do. Believe me, this way of communicating is more convenient and cheaper than you think. Especially since I don't have to have awkward silences, get mad over lost connections, free amount of texting, the benefits really do go on.

It's not there to replace phone calls, it's another form of communication when you need it. I also would rather leave a text message than a voicemail.

My wife and I have been living in different cities for the past year or so. When she was in classes and busy, I knew I could text her and she was able to get the messages right away.

If I had bothered calling, she wouldn't be able to answer and would just get voicemail. What a lot of people don't know is that you can send text via IM on some services. So with AIM, I think you put a +phonenumber in as the buddy name and you can send a text easier that way.

Most have Email translator services too that allow you to use a computer if you'd rather type than text.

I agree with you though. Some people get unlimited text messages instead of unlimited talk time... I'd rather spend an extra $10 a month for extra time and save the stress of typing on a stupid phone.

I send texts only under the following circumstances:

1) Someone texted me first and I am replying to them
2) I am indisposed in such a way that I cannot have a spoken conversation (concert, work, etc)
3) I want to send the same message to multiple people (e.g. dinner?, happy new year!)

I refuse. I have tried a couple of times and stopped midway through the first word. If I had a phone with keyboard then maybe I wouldn't look at it like I do, like sticking an icepick in my eye.

that's one of my main reasons. I tend to remember the big things (wife and I are going to dinner) but forget the details (when and where). She knows to text it and I can look it back up.

It's also good when a 2hr phone call would be ridiculous. My friends and I are all over the US but usually watch football games at the same time. Great for a "Great play!" kind of message

Texting is fine for small things that don't require a response or only require a yes/no. If somebody tries to carry a conversation over it, I'll just call them.

Think of it this way.

You can miss a call or voicemail, but you'll never miss a text message.

people who treat text messaging like IM on a computer are strange. just call the person.

This. I use a phone as a phone and leave it at that, and that also allows me to get cell phones that don't have 50+ gadgets that marketers have tried to make nearly mandatory by making them so integrated within the phone that you feel like you have to activate everything to have functionality. A simple good looking cell phone that gets good call quality is all I need.

Lol, yes. The only reliable way to get a hold of me is to text me. I'm one of those people that lets their voicemail box clog up, and my phone is on silent 75% of the time.

I also text really, really fast, so it's very easy for me. Texting on QWERTY keyboards weirds me out, though.

It's easier to just text my wife something versus taking the time to call her and either she's busy or I have someone walk up to my desk or call me half the time.

If I text her I can just send whatever I wanted to get across and she can view it and reply to it whenever she gets a chance and vise versa.

i do this. my texts are usually of the form:

"6:25 bus"

no need to use up minutes for such a short message. and the iphone keyboard makes it much easier than press numbers repeatedly on the keypad.

one should learn at least to text.

in case of emergency, voice may fail, but text will still work.
