I hate text messages for exactly this reason. Since I have no land line, only a cell phone, people get butthurt when I screen their calls.

Rarely, and only in reply to someone else's message.

Yes, I do. Believe me, this way of communicating is more convenient and cheaper than you think. Especially since I don't have to have awkward silences, get mad over lost connections, free amount of texting, the benefits really do go on.

It's not there to replace phone calls, it's another form of communication when you need it. I also would rather leave a text message than a voicemail.
Link.

?The maximum size for a text message is 160 characters, which takes 140 bytes because there are only 7 bits per character in the text messaging system, and we assume the average price for a text message is 5p. There are 1,048,576 bytes in a megabyte, so that's 1 million/140 = 7490 text messages to transmit one megabyte. At 5p each, that's £374.49 per MB - or about 4.4 times more expensive than the ?most pessimistic? estimate for Hubble Space Telescope transmission costs.?

I guess cellphone data is like water: Water gets piped to your house for less than half a cent per gallon, or you can buy it in 20oz bottles for $1 ($6.40/gallon).
Cellphones: Voice communication is likely a few kilobits per second, and you can get quite a lot of minutes per month for $40. Or you can send text messages at a much higher cost per byte.

It's amusing, we once had pagers, but then moved to voice communications. Now we're basically back to having pagers with integrated cameras.

I used to be one of those people who thought texting was the stupidiest thing until I started doing it.
Its a quick way of saying HI or passing infos.
Often times, when you call someone up, its hard deciding whos gonna end the conversation first. It gets awkward.
It helps if you have a cellphone that have a qwerty keyboard.

Yeah I did it for a while too, but ultimately with Verizon charging 5+5= $10.00 for basic texting on both phones -- it came out cheaper if I just got rid of the texting plans (basic data plan as they call it) and pay by the message since I only text if someone text's me, which is rare since I socially set up stuff as if i'm not to be contacted unless it's urgent (or family). Texting is handy in certain situations though.

I use to NEVER txt until about 5mo ago. Now I send about 2500 txts every month. I like it because you can keep in touch with friends without having to actually sit on the phone and have a "conversation". Plus I have some friends now who txt CONSTANTLY.

I think one of my major barriers is that most text messages I see involve horrible mangling of the language, and that just doesn't make my brain happy.

I text because other people text. I would prefer e-mail, but I know for some people a text works more reliably, so I use it instead.

T9 is where its at... I can crank out paragraphs very very quickly using T9 on an old Sanyo cell phone. Don't need any silly qwerty keyboard for that. I send and receive about 300/month. Texting is the e-mail for the younger generation

Yes, not much though. I'm demented and don't like the prediction, so I end up typing every letter, which is incredibly slow and annoying. Regardless, I don't get how people can send hundreds of these things without half of them being "lol" or "thx".

Eww, I can't use the Qwerty keyboard on phones at all. I was going to get a Samsung Gravity for the sole reason that I use my phone to text, but I used one in the Tmobile store and I just couldn't get used to texting with it.

T9 FTW.

Lets see, I dont like to talk that much so texting is nice and short. Plus it's a way to waste time throughout the day which is nice when you're bored. Dont have to worry about the person not being there or being busy, just send them a text and they'll respond when they see it or whatever.

Texting is great for quick communication -- especially when it's an emergency situation. Texts are more likely to go through than a phone call in those cases.

Without texting, I'd have been really screwed during (and after) Hurricane Ike.

But then I wouldn't say I only use texting in emergency situations. I text at least 1000 times a month. haha

It's quick and easy. I hate sitting on the phone talking to people so I can usually accomplish whatever quick message I have with a simple text. Also, if I'm at work or in class, I can't call someone, so I'll just text. Also, girls love to text .. so it's a nice way to casually keep flirting with a girl when you're bored.

I guess I don't get it. Lots of people text. What am I not understanding about this? What's the appeal? It takes way longer to type on a cell phone than on a keyboard and way longer to type on a keyboard than it takes to say something. What advantages are there to texting?

i dont know. i've seen people who are sitting at their computers text me, while i'm sitting at my computer. rather annoying.
