Do you text with your cell phone?

I have done it a time or two, when I was at a music festival and it was too loud to hear.

I guess I don't get it. Lots of people text. What am I not understanding about this? What's the appeal? It takes way longer to type on a cell phone than on a keyboard and way longer to type on a keyboard than it takes to say something. What advantages are there to texting?

sometimes i dont want to talk to someone *at all* so i may send a text that im busy

sometimes a message i want to get across is not important, so i send a text and the recipient can check it whenever, in case they are busy. sometimes when doing this i get caught up sending several messages back and forth, but rarely in quick succession. more like...over an hour or something.

im more likely to send a text than an email because i always have my phone, and i dont want most people to have my email address

You aren't always on a computer when you want to say something to someone. You don't always have enough to say to devote a whole email to. You also might just want to say something quick and not need a whole phone conversation about it. Especially if its something low-priority. Like I frequently text friends to see what they are up to. I don't necessarily want to have an extended conversation on the phone, more like a quick "Hey, whats up?" type message.
Or if you are at work, and can't be on the phone all the time, its a nice way to communicate with someone without both of you needing to be sitting in front of a PC.

what does a keyboard have to do with anything?

not everyone sits at their computer desk all day long. most people have their cell phone with them at all times.

i dont text long conversations, its for quick messaging.

oh and you must suck at texting, cause its not that much slower than a keyboard. t9 ftw

I do every day pretty much.

It's easier to just text my wife something versus taking the time to call her and either she's busy or I have someone walk up to my desk or call me half the time.

If I text her I can just send whatever I wanted to get across and she can view it and reply to it whenever she gets a chance and vise versa.

I have a palm centro, with a full qwerty, so now I text a lot more than I did with my last phone.

Texts are good for sending quick messages that queue up on the other end - they're good for sending addresses, or instructions, or just quick hellos...

quick message sending, for things that are not important enough for a phone call. or for times when it is not convenient to talk out loud or if you know the other party is in such a situation.

No. If you have something to say then call me or I'll call you. Think I've sent a total of 5 text messages my entire life.

Easy to clearly say what you want and be done with it.... (not talking about breaking up with ur SO over a text )

And people tend to engage in conversations when you are least expecting it, chit chat when you are really in a foul mood.... all this can be avoided, just text what you want to say, and forget about it.... Although, if you are expecting some kinda reply, you can't always hope they'll reply right away....

You don't have to say hi, you don't have to say bye. Basically, I ask a question via text, receive an answer, and that's that. If a text convo turns into a real conversation, though, I'll usually call them up instead of wasting texts.
