Do you think it's the HD?

A few weeks ago when I booted up, a got the message that said I needed to use my back-up disk. I re-booted and everything was okay. Then on Saturday, I heard a very loud whirring noise coming from the PC, I re-booted and got a blue screen that said "unable to write to drive "C', re-booted again, and got registry checker, and then backing up sys files. I fooled that up with a thorough scan disk including surface scan and found no errors. Now I'm up and running, but it I can still hear the whirring sound coming from my PC. It's not as loud as the initial sound, but nevertheless quite annoying. Any opinions would be appreciated.

It sounds like your hard drive is about to die. But you need to take the cover off your pc and get your ear down there to hear where the sound is coming from.

If it's coming from the hard drive get ready to replace it. If it's coming from a fan you need to replace it asap. While your in there make sure that every fan is running.

Be sure to turn off your pc before removing the cover. Then boot it and listen for the noise. Don't touch anything while the pc is running unless you know what you're doing.

hdd usually make metallic scratching or clicking sounds when they r damaged

whirring sounds are only from fans, so i think it may only be a bad fan...ones to check include the one for the power supply, cpu, case, cd-rw, etc.

all they may need is a little cleaning or a little tightening, instead of replacing the fan

that doesn't explain why u kept gettin boot problems though

Sure sounds like HD to me, the big clue is the blue screen "Error writing to Drive C" message. That is always a sign of impending doom. Start backing up your data ASAP.

Prepare for an HDD failure and backup.. but also check to see the power supply to the drive is adequate... I had some IBM GXP doing similar things and it was due to low power.. sharing to many devices on the same branch with the HDDs.. I replaced with a 400watt PSU and only use the HDD on a single branch from the PSU.. havent had problems since

Thanks for the follow-up...the HD is still under warranty so I RMA'd it and will install ASAP. Just to be on the safe side I also bought a new fan because that seems to an issue too. I did the back-up and will be using Norton's Ghost prog to transfer from one to the other. Any thoughts on this program?

Norton Ghost works like a charm. What have you backed up your data to if you have already RMA'd your Hard disk?

Good news about Norton's! I only did a basic back-up using Norton's Systemworks. Since the HD was covered under warranty, I did what they called the "no excuses end user replacement program", meaning I gave them my cc info, specific HD info (model #, serial#, etc) and they Fed-Ex'ed the new one with a return Fed-Ex postage label. I have 30 days to return the old one and my cc will not be charged. If by chance it is, I'm ready to dispute it with my cc company. This is a Fujitsu HD, and it came in the infamous shopss.com membership/computer fiasco.

Just wanted to update you guys. I'm a very happy camper tonight. It was the HD, and the new one is in and working like a charm. Norton's Ghost is awesome!! The whole procedure took less than an hour and it's a 13G HD. Everything is exactly as it was on the old one...perfect clone! I'm impressed. Thanks again for your input.
