Do you think that in general, once you're successful, you can get away with a lot?

Successful and especially useful to a bunch of people.

Let's say there's a scientist who creates a vaccine that ends up saving millions of lives all over the world.

If this guy behaves like a prick, he'd usually get away with it because he's successful and his work is useful to other people, right?

If you make people money they don't care what you do. Sadly. They just pretend they don't know what really goes on or rationalize it. Nobody ever tries to stop a money train.

Do we really want to save millions of people? Population is already a problem. Maybe if it cured stupidity--something that positively benefits all--and not just some random cure that saves millions of potentially stupid people ...

Then he can behave like a prick and it's fine?

Yes we do. Do you want your family to die so we have less of a population problem? I bet not.

Cure the living. Have other methods to curb birth rates.

Personally i couldn't hold anything against someone who created a vaccine that saved millions of lives, especially if i needed the vaccine. Someone like that is just too successful.

It's not overpopulated. There is an insane amount of open space out there. Everyone just wants to all live in the cities super close to everything and everyone.

A life is valuable regardless of how many other ones there are.

Haha. So if this guy also happened to be a wife beater for instance, that would just go unnoticed I guess. Perhaps not unnoticed but no one would care much about it because he's useful to them.

For the woman in question it would in some sense be like society versus her.

No one gets away with being a prick. That's the law of karma.

Let's take a case in point: OJ Simpson. Yes, you can say he got away with murder, he was acquitted in the murder trial. However, bad karma caught up with him, he couldn't help himself and a few years down the road he committed a crime that got his sorry ass in jail, all in spite of his great fame and success as a superstar football player and quite successful actor. He's still in jail. You can say he got away with it, but not really.

I don't have to think it, I know it. It happens every day.

Look at how many sports figure majorly fuck up and still play making millions.

Look at CEOs who fuck up and still make millions in severance and then get hired by another company and continue to make millions.

If by successful, you mean "financially successful" then the answer is "yes".

Let me give you a specific hypothetical scenario.

There's a scientist who has invented a vaccine that has the potential to cure millions of people. This vaccine hasn't been released yet and he, as an individual, is essential if the vaccine is to be released. This person is financially successful. He is also in a position of authority and a lot of people's jobs depend on him. In other words, people by and large need him. If this person also happens to be unfairly abusive to another person who is not even close to being as successful as him, would the person being screwed stand much of a chance? I'd guess that many people would actually start finding fault with the person being screwed.

not really. if you get arrested for something minor and you are a powerful/successful person, it can totally ruin your career

But when people need you (or like you or respect you), they might not want you arrested. They might hush it up or rationalise it away or find fault with the victim. Especially in the kind of scenario I wrote about in post #18.

No. Rich and famous people get jailed all the time.

Unless you can find a specific example of whatever the hell you're talking about.

Jon Corzine is an excellent example.

Run a financial firm that becomes one of the ten largest bankruptcies in US history. Check

Resign with a 12 million dollar plus bonus. Check

'Lose' 1.6 billion dollars from your customer's accounts. Check

Testify before Congress that “I simply do not know where the money is.” Check

Former Democratic State Governor. Check

Former Democratic Senator. Check

Raised over a half million dollars for Obama's election fund. Check

Have Eric Holder in Obama's Justice Department refuse to indict you.

Obama's campaign was backed by over a billion dollars in campaign contributions. Think that that money was given without a quid pro quo?

Then again, most of the 'little people' already know that the laws that apply to them don't apply to people like Jon Corzine.
