I have never worked in a union...

As have NONE of the Anti-Union Posters here.

Granted, there are BAD Unions doing bad things, Factories and service come to mid.
But in the trades (Construction), you know you will have skilled workers, and you are not above being fired if you can't perform as good as the best person on the job.

It doesn't matter if it's the current CEO or an incoming CEO, CEO compensation would have to be > than market rate in order for a CEO to want to come to a sinking ship.

and a million bucks is seriously a drop in the bucket when your yearly revenue is 2.5B (or w/e)

Based on today's economy, there are plenty of CEOs and execs that would have accepted those jobs for a fraction of those salaries.

There are plenty of Hostess type products flooding in from Mexico.

I wouldn't be surprised if Grupo Bimbo bought out what was left of Hostess.
They bought Sara Lee's bread and fresh baked product arm not too long ago and are still expanding fairly rapidly.

I have worked union in construction before. I still do construction work but not union anymore for the similar reasons as this story. I will say you are right ONLY as long as the companies are making profits and everyone can earn their share leaving room for the companies to grow or do as they need financially....but when times get lean, so should everyone in that union. No doubt some do I would hope, but....well this story here alone should be way more than obvious as to how typical Union greed can be. Not too many left in my area anymore, most of the union jobs are gone, all that remains is the plumbers and carpenters union and I think all members around here work over an hour away most of the time. As far as skills...well the ones with skills that end up unemployed, often end up using their skills in a non union job..like me for example. We got some very skilled operators n such in jobs like mine now simply because of companies shutting down leaving members no where to go. Members are only stong and pro union until their children get hungry. I was never a huge advocate anyway like some are, but the leet attitudes that some Union guys portray against anyone not in the union makes me sick. I don't care what type of "Mafia" I have to belong to or not belong to, I just work wherever that feeds my family and that is more important than any Maf...I mean, Union.

lol, I worked in a union before. Everyone was lazy as shit and there was no incentive to do better because 1) it was next to impossible to get fired and 2) seniority

Skilled workers?...c'mon. I may have never worked in a union, but I have dealt with very many unionized workers. Just because you are in a trade union does NOT make you skilled. Granted, I have come across people in union's without the union mentality, but it is rare.

wonder what was going through their mind when their strike caused their job to be gone. You cannot go on strike anymore, sadly not all people know this. The government either passes a back to work legislation, or the company fires you. You have no rights as a worker. You're just working for a bunch of twinkies.

Which is exactly why workers need strong unions now as much as ever. The collapse of organized labor led directly to the loss of tariffs which led directly to the loss of manufacturing and the destruction of the middle class. Workers need to stop worrying about bullshit, turn off the f$*%ing TV set, and start voting their own interests.

Unions are no different from the politicians that serve and represent us. In the end, they only serve and represent their own selfish interests.

I won't eat Hostess products now as an adult knowing what is in them, but still have fond childhood memories of eating Twinkies. I guess we won't have the opportunity to discover whether Twinkies really can outlive cockroaches.

Remember Bordens dairy? Same-o.
Wage negotiations pending, the owners closed up shop.
Bordens had the best ice cream sandwiches IN THE WORLD!

Besides as for hostess, I heard hohos caused cancer.
Or was it hobos?
That's a thought. Hostess hoho to hostess hobo.

This is what I was wondering. I'm not sure what I'd do, but I'd be leaning towards refusing the contract also, and telling them to shove their job up their asses. I'm willing to make sacrifices to keep a company afloat, but not to be exploited by the executives. Regardless of whether the executive raises had a significant affect on the bottom line or not, you don't raise your own salary, while cutting that of the people who actually make the company work.

Executives aren't even needed. A bakery can run without them, but it can't run without bakers...

From what I read the guy that took over this year cut those executives pay to $1 for 2012 with normal pay scheduled to return in 2013.

It doesn't seem like Hostess was a very well run company. At the same time, executive pay isn't what killed them. That was a standard union red herring.

Total mismanagement and lining pockets by the top management. Hostess and many other of Interstate Bakeries brands remain profitable. They were cleaned out at the top. The strike had nothing to do with the failure of the company.
