I don't believe the Senate Republicans will vote to do anything that's right for the nation. So no, they won't vote to remove Trump. Individuals like McConnell and Graham could watch Trump murder their family members on the Senate floor and they'd still defend him. I say individuals, because the term "people" no longer applies to these dregs.

Yes. It will probably get to the point where only Trump's base is against impeachment, and his base isn't enough to hold seats.

It'll never make the Senate.

Only if Trump resigns before it gets there, which seems unlikely. Dunno how McConnell will handle it, but if that treacherous old bastard turns on Trump he'll be dead before he hits the floor.

Everything Trump touches dies. Anybody believe he hasn't touched himself? But then again he has also touched our democracy. Is our democracy dead, then, is the same question.

The GOP has been cornholing this nation for 2 generations now. I see little reason for them to stop, especially when they appear right on the cusp of realizing the fruits of all of their very worst intentions.

A poll, of whether we trust the Senate Republicans to do the right thing? You must be joking....

There are 2 factors to consider:
1. Do they determine that Trump is posing too much danger to the country to contain
2. Does public opinion change enough that they don't think Trump could carry them in the upcoming election

We may already be there prompting using the recess to lay low and see how the investigation plays out. But I have little confidence in that. My hope is enough of that sentiment at least holds off the politicians and pundits from riling up the base. I have a suspicion that supporters who aren't getting the echo effect from Fox news, etc., at least to the same degree, will start to see Trump as whining instead of winning.

Otherwise, the critical point would be the impeachment trial in the Senate. Firstly, can they come to an agreement in rules that limits the unscrupulous whataboutism, obstruction, non-answers, etc. that have plagued attempts to expose Trump during open hearings. Secondly, is the public interest going to be like it was with Nixon, or are we just going to consume sound bytes and particularly the kind of Fox spin jobs which have isolated Trump from action to this point?

One idea for impeachment rules might be a blind vote. That would be the best shot for the party if they want to can Trump and not risk alienating the base. They could even collaborate to make the vote seem super close.

I agree with @dank69, today no. With hearing and whistleblowing at a rapid pace I'll say this. If Trump doesn't lose 5-10 points from his base by early November I will still say no way.

Meh, saw an interview with someone who used to be a respectable moderate, Judd Greg (R-NH, Gov and Senator). Didn't support impeachment. So, no fucking way the Senate upholds the impeachment.

The problem is they think party is country -- that Trump couldn't possibly be worse than any Democrat.
Trump even endorsed Chinese Communism yesterday. His lapdogs will follow suit since Putin is already one of their heroes

Senate Republicans will do whatever Mitch tells them to do. If Mitch figures that removing Trump is the better course of action to maintaining GOP leadership in the Senate and won’t negatively effect down-ballot races in 2020, then he’ll do it. If he thinks that a double-impeachment and caretaker President Pelosi will energize Trump’s base like never before in 2020, then he’ll gladly play along. Not like Pelosi will get anything past him in the Senate—definitely not any SCOTUS seats if RBG retires.

I don’t think Democrats have any appetite for a double impeachment—that’s all media and pundit hype. Best case scenario going into 2020 is a President Pence serving as a constant reminder of just what an utter failure this Administration turned out to be.

If the vote was today? No chance in hell. It's more difficult to say what's going to happen down the road. The Ukraine situation has spiraled out of control very quickly and has gone far beyond what I could ever imagine. If more and more damning information keeps coming out, I do see a possibility of Senate convicting Trump.

To be honest, at this point I'm fine either way. If the vote is held and they don't convict him, I'm hoping this can be used to tilt Senate towards democratic side which is probably more useful in the long run than removing Trump with only a year left in the office. My only other hope is that Trump will be prosecuted once out of the office.

It depends how the doners and constituents of these Republicans feel about impeachment. Many are cowards and will vote in unison to not impeach. My gut feeling, if the vote were today, it is a resounding NO!

Now...that may change if more damaging stuff comes out.

Court decisions expected next month will likely force Deutsche Bank and others to release documents further incriminating Trump. The slowed-down impeachment inquiry may then expand into a larger, more comprehensive, harder-to-counter set of charges.

Slow it down a little. Lawyerly-types on Twitter have been saying this all along. This thread makes the case, for example.

Honestly, what's the point of fighting for Trump's financial documents in various courts if they don't plan on using them? Sure it would be nice to embarrass Trump if the documents show he is worth far less money than he claimed or paid zero taxes for a rather long stint (both of which I wouldn't bet against) but they're not just trying to get them for the optics alone.

I'd much rather have the House send the Senate a handful of articles of impeachment on several different charges than just one. That makes it a lot harder for Republicans to talking point their way out of the process and also harder for McConnell to jam it through and be voted on without much testimony or debate.

A month ago, I would have said no way. Now? Who the heck knows? Things have pretty much gone completely off the rails. I will say that I agree with 538 that if Republican support goes, it'll go pretty much all at once.

I think Mitch controls the floodgates...at least politically. At some point, Rebecca Mercer might decide enough is enough, it was fun while it lasted (and at least she saved millions on taxes) and pull the plug on her PACs or redirect funds from the 2020 campaign downballot. Kochs have already shutdown their network.
