If McConnell allowed the senate to convict it would be handing the entire government over to the Democrats in 2021 because no one in the base would turn out to vote for a GOP that just strung up their messiah. Trump is everything the right wing mass media has conditioned its audience to want. The GOP is going to be Trump and Trump clones all the way down for the foreseeable future. A secret ballot in the senate wouldn't save the GOP in the 2020 election.

I'm still rooting for prison time in an isolated cell. As a threat to national security, Gitmo might be the place.Trump will eventually disappear when he loses power, which is guaranteed in the constitution. First he'll be a lame duck, then a private citizen who may well be facing some heavy duty legal assaults. The GOP will survive Trump. Trump himself will not survive. Will we survive the GOP? Trump and his cohorts have implied they will somehow magically begin cooperating with the impeachment inquiry if/when Speaker Pelosi takes a formal vote. Does anyone think they will? I wouldn't bet on it.
It's the DOJ, currently under the thumb of William Barr, that is responsible for enforcing Congressional subpoenas. This is the problem the House is facing that no other impeachment effort has suffered: A politicized DOJ intent on working only for Trump, not the citizens of the United States. It's a big deal, and not in a good way. Barr's actions are in conflict with his oath of office, but for now, he runs the enforcement arm. Who is going to enforce the laws against him?
Anyone want to venture a guess what happens if the subpoenas go to the SCOTUS and are ruled valid, and the people defying them continue to do so?
If an order of the SCOTUS is meaningless, then we're already in a state of lawlessness.
