I'm all for giving a six month advanced notice. Hammer the news with, if you cross, you will be shot on sight. Declare the entire southern border a military base. Nobody enters a military base illegally. It will only take one or two examples and nobody will try the stunt anymore. At some point it has to stop. Time to get tough. Then we graduate to a more kind, more expedient system. Approvals of good people should not take more than a few weeks, when there is merit to letting them in. Not everyone gets to come in. Right now, we don't know who we're getting. Some want a better life for themselves and their children, while others have other motives. A large sum of people desire to come here to carry out illegal activities, or live off our social systems. Most of the heroin comes from south America. There are a boatload of reasons why unknown, unvetted people should not be able to cross, willy-nilly. It shouldn't be our job to sift out the criminal element, but we often don't figure out who they are until they commit crimes. Should have been stopped at the border.
