Do you think you will buy a smart watch in the next year?

Apparently 2014 is supposed to be 'the year of the smart watch'. there have been few products release so far but none have blown anyone away.

I think the industry is waiting on apple to popularise the devices, but it could be although sell.

Personally, I would buy one because I like gadgets, but I can see their limitations.

Right now the Gear 2 looks pretty good, but only compatible with Samsung devices (big mistake).

I'll only buy a smartwatch once they are aesthetically indistinguishable from, or superior to classical watches. I don't care if it has really minimalist "smart" functionality* as long as it looks really, really good.

* just visibility of notifications, a single headline describing these and the ability to click them away if they're unimportant suffices

Not really interested at this point. I like gadgets too but this concept just doesn't do it for me.

I would have said no way, not interested...until the Moto 360. The only one that actually has me interested.

yeah. they have to look classy instead of like another disposable electronic gadget.

No thanks. It's no easier to glance at my wrist to see the time than it is to glance at my Moto X (active display). Having to hit a button to see the display would totally kill it for me, and I'm not convinced they can get orientation and motion sensors right so it always comes on when you need it.

The Moto 360 looks the most appealing, but I don't think I'll bite (unless it's in the impulse buy territory for me). I don't know how I feel about smart watches - there hasn't been any compelling smart watches that provide valuable functionality that I already can't do with a smartphone. Having said all that, I have a Basis fitness watch, and it's great. It's a pedometer, heart rate monitor, tracks skin temperature/perspiration rates, calorie counter, analyzes sleep pattern.

If it's incredible, as in life changing for fitness, yes. Otherwise, probably not.

Motorola really needs to follow up the Moto 360 with something more fitness focused.

The MotoACTV was awesome, but it is desperately in need of a major refresh to compete with offerings today. I still use mine when I go running.

But I'd love a watch that I could wear on a run and do everything on it's own - most of these have very limited functionality without a phone, and none offer the ability to store and play music directly from them, including the Moto 360.
They definitely need to take the idea of the MotoACTV, but not the full direction of that device and brand. Make a standalone fitness wearable under the new Moto X/G/360 family (attention to form and function with style). It'd be great to offer a full standalone experience but also feature the new Android Wear platform.

I'd like to continue to refuse to carry a phone on my runs. I like nothing in pockets, except a key in the key/money pocket. I used to run with a ZuneHD on my upper arm - that was barely acceptable in my opinion, and that device is small compared to phones.

A MotoACTV on my wrist? Perfect. I'd like it a little less bulky, however. Or at least feel less bulky.

No.

They're mostly all still amazingly goofy/near-future yardsale wear.

I honestly see absolutely no point. I would welcome it if it did not have to charge, but otherwise useless garbage. I carry my phone with me all the time.

Actually, if it had HRM, I might buy it just for that.

No probably not as I don't wear a watch anymore. When we get to the point of smaller phones and watches that are also small phones then maybe I would choose a watch over the phone in my pocket.

Change the thread title from "in the next year" to "in your lifetime" and my answer is still no. Watches are dumb.
