Do you tip at Sonic drive-in?

got into a discussion with some friends. i always paid with credit card, and never tipped...but now i feel guilty because everyone says i should have tipped...curious to see what ATOT thinks

You mean where you pull up, they take your order, then bring your food out? Yeah, I usually tip for that. I thought you meant drive-through at first.

Not like I do at a sit down restaurant, but I make it a point to let them keep the change if it's under a couple of bucks. I tip a lot better for a waitress in a sit-down establishment.

You're supposed to tip at Sonic? It's not like they are a full-service restaurant...so I never even thought about tipping. It's not like they get paid wait service wages.

No Sonics anywhere near where I live so given the limited poll-choices available I was forced to vote no, however any time somone takes my order then serves me my food I'll give at least a small tip.

If I have a simple order (just a drink or something like that) and they bring it out to me in line, I'll usually just tell them to keep the change if it's <$1 (no point in them walking in and back just to bring me $0.50). I've always wondered if others do this. If so, the people working there can probably make some pretty decent cash for a fast food job.

I mean you tip waitresses because their hourly rate is like $1-2 dollars (they rely on tips), but if these people get a few dollars in tips on top of their normal $6-7 every hour, that's pretty respectable for fast food. Then again, having worked in fast food, I don't know if any amount of money makes it worth it, lol.

So I guess the point I'm making is I wouldn't feel guilty for not tipping. It's a nice thing to do, but they definitely don't "need" the tips as is the case with wait staff at restaurants.

IIRC Sonic waitstaff are also paid with the expectation that they will make a decent part of their money on tips, but are less tip-dependent than someone at a sit-down restaurant.

Our sonic has a drive-thru, so I rarely park and order, thus I do not give them a tip.

I went there for my first time last week. I asked my friend that same question. He said that he used to tip them but then his friend started working there and they are paid a full wage not a wage expecting tips. They also have the same sort of receipt as a fast food drive-thru if you run a credit card (without the line for tip and total). I do not believe they expect a tip. I am sure they will gladly take a tip though.

We have two near here and they're HORRIBLE! The one in the next little town folded in less than two years, and I expect the one closest to me to fold as well.

Their variety is ok, (not many places offer tater tots) but the quality of food plain sux.


BTW, NO TIP at Sonic.

It's fast food. (or supposed to be fast anyway)

Yes, I tip at fast food drive-thrus.

I also tip:

- the mailman when he brings my mail
- Bell Canada every time I make a phonecall
- Anandtech every time I view a thread
- Mother Earth every time I breathe
- the Sun every time it shines on me

I have only been to Sonic once. I paid with credit card, didn't really think about tipping. However, the guy that ran the food out says "I hope the weather clears up so I can get more tips." I took that as a request for a tip, I gave him couple bucks.
