Do you tip or not tip in this situation?

I pick up take-out food a lot and often wonder if I should tip the waiter/waitress who helps with the order when I pick it up. I really don't feel that it's necessary to tip when picking up a "to go" order; however, if I need something out of the ordinary or the person has to go out of their way, then I may tip, but otherwise I don't.

What's your opinion on this?

who's the person? if it's a friend or relative then there's no need... it's just a favor they're doing for you.

If it's a business thing, meaning that the go-for of the office is getting it for you, then you don't tip. It's apart of their job. If you're at home and it's a friend or relative, then you don't tip, because they will eat the food as well. In fact, I can't think of a time when you would tip that wouldn't just be odd.

I think I know what you're talking about. Say you go to Chili's TO GO entrance. There is a tip jar sitting on the counter and you want to know if you should tip the person that hands you your bag of food. I don't feel the need to tip this person in this situation. Are you supposed to tip the counter staff at McDonald's or Taco Bell? Why wouldn't you tip the person at McDonald's or Taco Bell if this person is doing the same thing? The way I see it, this person has done nothing special or above-and-beyond to warrant a tip, unless picking up a bag and handing it to me is considered such an action. Last I checked, it wasn't.

ya, I don't tip for "to go" orders, unless they do something extra, then I give them some change (50cents or something)

tipping is to expected here

I was referring to the waiter or waitress who helps you when you go in the restaurant to get the food.

I don't tip for take-out...I'm doing all the work.

On the same note, are you supposed to tip at a buffet restaurant? Like at a Chinese buffet where all the waiter does is bring you some water?

Ive actually been thinking about this alot. I go to Chili's for take out alot and when i get there then a waitress has to get my food for me. Sure it only takes 3-6 minutes of her time, but she is a waitress and if I didnt single her out to get my grub then she would be waiting a table. So with that reasoning i tip roughly 10% ($1)

Im a pretty cheap guy, but since i did spend my time as a waiter i feel awfully guilty for people that live off of tips so i sucker myself into helping them out. Anyone in the business now have a response on whether or not on what im doing is considered "standard" or a "bonus" for you guys?

I'm the one getting up, driving, and doing the "pick-up", not "delivery", why should I tip?

I'm a big advocate of tipping, however, I see no need to tip in this situation.

I'll tip a buck (more for a large order) for take-out, because I don't want to encourage the staff to avoid them. I figure the people who are seated are sitting there fuming because the waiter/waitress is handling my take-out order, and mentally subtracting from the tip they were going to leave.

Someone is still taking the order, making sure it gets made and getting it ready for me. The only difference is it's given to me packaged instead of on a plate. I figure that's still worth a tip.

Buffets, definitely tip, but on the light side. I still want drink refills and the empty plates removed.

If I were picking up take-out at Chili's or something, I would tip the person who brought me my food. Afterall, they are still only making a small amount hourly and basically living on their tips and they did have to put forth some effort to get my food. I would not tip them as much as I would if I sat down and ate in the restaurant, but probably like 10%. However, I don't tip at McDonald's, Starbucks, Taco Bell etc. In fact it makes me mad that they have those tip jars out to begin with. They don't need to be tipped for simply doing their job. If anyone should be tipped in a fast food situation, it should be the people in the back making the food, notthe person who takes the order and hands me my food. And yes, it is different than the waitress at the restaurant because they are getting paid at least minimum wage (in Hawaii they get paid $8.00 per hour) and they are not living off of their tips.

If it's a place with a huge take-out area, no. But if I do it from somewhere where tht's not the case, then I fugure the tip usually goes also to the cooks, etc. So yes.
