Sorry for the noob question, but i just got my first lcd monitor and was wondering what you use to check for dead pixels: a specific program or just checking against a particular color background. Thanks.

On Screen Display.

I black background like when you are booting up or the windows splash screen are good situations to look for dead pixels.

There are simple programs out there that let you switch between a few different full screen colors. I can't imagine it being a difficult program to write. Just a few lines.

Why would you purposly look for something like this? If you do happen to find one won't it annoy you?

I agree.

If I don't happen to see it on a day to day basis then it don't matter one little tiny rats @ss if it has a dead pixel or not.

Now if there were a bunch of them and I noticed them without doing a days worth of special testing to locate these dead pixels then I would make a stink with the Mfg.

I was glad to see the Mfg's change the policies to I think 8 or more dead pixels required for a replacement... or a group in one spot or area. But one or two pixels scattered on the screen is nothing.

I agreed. If I don't see it, no need to worry. Most dead pixels are notable with the naked eyes.

But if they'll take it back and send you another without a dead pixel what would be the downside, other than a few extra days?

retailers here have a tolerance policy... something like minimum of 3 dead pixels before exchange. If it had more than 3 I'd definitely want a replacement, I don't care if it annoys me or not. of course it's best to check the monitor right then and there during purchase, but I realize this isn't possible with mail orders.

Come on, now. It seems pretty obvious that the point is to thoroughly check out the monitor while he is still able to exchange it.

I know what you are saying, but if you have to use something other than your own darn eyes to find it what does it matter... I have known several people that sent back an LCD after finding a few dead pixels that were only noticeable after a meticulus examination, then they received the replacement with like several dead pixels right in the middle and they stuck out like a sore thumb... but there were not enough of them to qualify for a return. STUCK! There is a point where you become too anal. Granted if you can examine the monitor before hand it would be better, but I have found that Most LCD's have very few dead pixels these days, and when they do they are usually on the outer edges where they are not noticed.

Maybe... but Maybe you will get one with dead pixels in a worse place. MOST vendors require 8 or more dead pixels or a group in the center of the screen. I haven't seen a dead pixel in over a year. Maybe I'm just lucky?
