I too took a keyboarding class in high school, but I never use the right shift. I remember they wanted us to use both, but I was such a rebel that I deliberately chose to use left only. Oh yeah, I was dangerous. Plus I have big hands so it has never been a practical hindrance.

I had to look at my keyboard to find the one on the right, I doubt it's ever been used.

According to Whatpulse, the left shift key gets roughly 4x as much usage as the right, roughly 250 presses per day versus 60.

F11 is the least-used key, with only 2 presses in the past 6 months.
No key has gone unused.
The Ctrl keys comprise more than 5% of all presses. I do like keyboard shortcuts.

I'll check at work tomorrow if I remember.

I actually had to type stuff to find out as it happens so naturally. I voted too early and said left, but I seem to use both. Depends which side of the keyboard the letter is on as it's easier to hold down shift with the opposite hand of the letter I'm pressing.

My right shift is way more worn out than my left though.

weird how so many people actually use right shift, though.

ermm.. ok, actually, i use it too, i just realized. while typing this. what i thought was "right alt" but my brain said "yeah, right shift, close enough, say you don't use it".

i use it only for @, :, " and ?, instead using left shift for the two < and >.
Originally i used it for even less, just the small cluster next to right shift, while using left shift for the number keys, which evolved in going up the numbers row while still using shift.
I also hold my left hand in a specific way, with the pinky touching the ~ key (left of 1) while typing, and holding Tab while gaming. Palm of the hand holds the left corner of the keyboard; due to having grown up with crap keyboards, i grip it like this to hold it still.

Seems weird to me that anyone who has typed much wouldn't use the right shift. I get gaming and all, but It's just a easier movement. If anything I use right shift more for typing as the right pinky is mostly punctuation and control options. The left pinky OTOH has to hit several letters including "A" which is capitalized quite a bit.

I guess playing a guitar makes it easier too. Your left hand is doing some weird shit contorting and stretching to make chords. Putting my pinky under isn't much different than making a "G" chord.

"easier" is dependent on the individual's habit. It's much easier for me to left pinky. It completely depends on practice. If you practice hard enough, you could use your feet to make a peanut butter sandwich and done often enough, it would probably be easier for you to do it that way. I've seen it done, Tosh.0 with the no arm girl.

I seem to use my ring finger for shift.. Feels weird to hit it with my pinky.

And no, Windows, I don't want to turn on Sticky Keys. FFS.

Interesting... I voted both, but then I did a typing test just to make sure.
I almost exclusively use the right shift with my right pinky!
I am right-handed, I've never had any formal typing training, and I have a quite high typing speed.

^You really don't need training to learn how to type, like anything physical, it's just muscle memory regardless of which hand you favor. I masterbate with my left hand and I'm right handed..go figure. Typing of the dead would be a great game for kids to increase typing skills, shame they don't remake that game for Nintendo or something and include a cheap, wireless kb.

When I think about it a little longer, I realize that I use right-shift A LOT.
Opps... I need to change my answer on the poll.
