Do you use one space or two between sentences?

I use one space. I've always learned it that way, and nobody has told me to do it another way. I was raised in England; not sure if that has anything to do with it. I have come across a lot of people that use two. How about you?

I voted "Depends on the application?" For general writing, typing, etc, I just use a single space. When writing formally - like for school papers, resume's, etc I use 2.

I'm curious what kind of education you got in England. Why the heck is there a question mark after "Depends on the application?"

One space. Using two spaces just adds to much "white-space." I type all my documents in either Arial, Verdana or Times New Roman though. That might be why.

Two, but I learned how to type on a typewriter, so I guess that's why. You can't tell on this forum though, I just left ten spaces after that last period. And 15 there.

It depends on the application.

I've never used a typewriter in my life, but I learned that you always put two spaces after a period. So, that's what I always do, and it pissed me off a little bit when I realized that HTML only renders one space after a period.

But, in journalism, we learned always to use one space after a period for stories. So, if I'm writing up a story, I try to remember to put one space. Everywhere else I put two, including in this post right now, even though it won't display both spaces. It's just habit now.

one. whats the point of two? People who taught you to use 2 were old people using typewriters.

My computer teacher in middle school (which was only about 5 years ago) told me that it was one of those rules that doesn't really apply anymore, it's probably still proper to use two, but at the same time, pick up a novel and see how many of them contain sentences that begin with "but" or "and".


BTW, hasn't anyone noticed that all the people who are saying two are still only posting with one space between their sentences?

That's because HTML doesn't read more than one space. You can type two words, put as many spaces between them as you like, and it will still show up as one space.
