Optical mice are definately the best. I thought it was kind of hard to get used to at first playing Counter Strike or Quake 3, but once you get used to it's the best. You don't have to worry about that gummed up mouse ball making the percision of your shot off, because it hit the gunk on the ball.

It was hard to get used to, mostly because if you didn't lift it up high enough the optics would still move the mouse around, even though it was not touching the mousepad or desk. But once you get used to it, there is no going back!

Optical for sure!!

i have an intellimouse explorer v3 and the best mouse ever made, the logitech wingman gaming mouse. i tried using the explorer, and it did adequate, but it just didn't feel as nice as the wingman. plus i like the 3 buttons compared to the 2 buttons + scroll, and yes i know there are 4 buttons + scroll, but i never used those two buttons on the side no matter how hard i tried to force myself to. everyone I LAN with agrees that the wingman was by far the most superior mouse to ever be made, too bad they had to stop making it. :| i would suggest the logitech dual optical or the intellimouse explorer v3 as the two best currently manufactured gaming mouse solutions.

I will never go back to a ball mouse again. My first optical mouse sucked and couldn't keep up when I moved it around really fast, but every optical since then has performed like a champ.

<< The boomslang is a ball mouse that's made for gaming, it has really high dpi and the buttons are huge, Razerzone. my roommate has one and it's decent for gaming but blows for everything else. i only use the Intellimouse Explorer and i find it good for gaming and actually getting some work done as well. >>

I love mine for all applications.

Agreed

Feel the love

Puts the opticals I've used to shame. Perfect shape and the buttons require no effort to depress.

I'm having mixed reactions to my new Logitech USB optical. The movement seems fine, but the buttons occasionally stick. This is very bad because I have my forward and backward movements bound to each mouse key so my avatar will walk right out into a crowd of shooting opponents...not a good way to hang on to your weapons.

I used a MS Optical 1.0 until a few months ago when it died and then I replaced it with a 3.0 mouse. Neither had any problems in games at all, and I mainly play FPs. I can NEVER use a balled mouse again.

Boomslang!

I don't mind optical mice, and I have a really nice Dell ball mouse, but they don't come out much 'cause of my boomslang 2000.

Not to brag but I am the sniper/soldier on a chapmionship Return to Castle Wolfenstien team and I would never go back to using a ball. For speed, and accuracy use an optical. One note of them though. Most optical mice turn down their reading rate when not moving so if you are like me and use it for sniping and such in FPS make sure that when you begin to move the mouse again it dosent jump. It happens mostly to cordless mice. I recomend the Logitech optical wheelmouse SE. Make sure you get the one with 2X written on it.

I have both a Logitech Dual Optical and Intellimouse 3.0 and they are pretty good for gaming. However, my trusty, USB Logitech Wheel mouse is still awesome. I find that ball mouse still better, but the optical is "good enuff"

I really hate optical mice becuase they suck at gaming like cs or quake, do you guys use it and is it fine?

I dont know for Quake, but for CS, the world champion CS clan NIP (ninjas in pajamas or something like that) use the optical intellimouse v3, except one guy uses the boomerslang 2K.

I don't know what the X3 guys use though.

I know what your sayin with Optical Mice and gaming. I used to use a Logitech Wingman Extreme gaming mouse (ball mouse)... Oh man I loved that mouse, I never thought I could make the switch to optical.... cause when I game I sometimes lift up the mouse a tad bit, and the response is very different between optical and ball mice when you lift it up

But I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer now, I love it

Using a intellimouse explorer 3.0 on a cloth pad (only thing that works lol) I got for a couple bux, works alright, slightly inferior to a nice ball mouse though, my logitech mouseman wheel 0wned it, it just felt better.
Both on ps/2, USB hasn't been nice to me

Got used to my new mouse though, oh well, don't have to clean it I suppose

The Logitech mouseman Dual Optical ownz all your mice. I have one and really (really!) like it. I used to have a logitech mouseman, but I haven't looked back since the upgrade. I just love the Mouseman series' shape

Hmmm

Well I think it all comes down to personal preference.

I've used a few optical mice, starting with the Intellimouse 1.0 (old school shape w/ optical and scroll), and more recently the newest revision of explorer.
Although great for general use, I still prefer my trusty Microsoft ergo 1.0 - again the old-school ergo shape, no scroll funtion, 'smoker's white' as I like to call it, and a big metal plate inside it that i've never seen before. Gives the mouse a fair bit more weight, which makes it easily the most accurate mouse i've ever used.

Dont get me wrong, I like the optical mice, but like some people prefer their 'boomslangs' and others no doubt have an 'old faithful' tucked away or possibly still in use.
I was, back in the day, a keyboard-only player (yeah well the mouse didn't really enhance doom or wolf3d ), so lack of buttons or scroll doesn't bother me - there's plenty of other keys around W,S,A, and D.

One thing's for sure - if I miss a shot in UT or TFC, i'm not going to go running out to get PS/2 port refresh rate improving software, or optical mice, or a big shiny metal ball that might someway improve my hand/eye co-ordination.

If you cant make a shot with a ball mouse then either it's a really bad mouse, or you need more practice.
If someone beats me, the first thing that comes into my mind is defintely not 'well his/her mouse must be better than mine...'
