A buddy of mine introduced to me the wonders of easynews.com combined with newzbin.com and I haven't looked back since.

I voted newsgroups all the way!

I remember newsgroups when email was a new concept. They were fun then when everything was modem-based, but times have changed. They are difficult to use, unreliable and there are many other alternatives out there. If you want to use a message board, find website-based ones like ATOT. If you're looking for downloads, BT is the best bet now.

And I suggest you let newgroups die. There is no point it mentioning it and extending the death of an outdated technology to the new generation of web users.

Newsgroups is great, sad to see it dying for non-binaries. The openness of the usenet makes for a great archive source. Now we just have proprietary web-based boards all over which are a PITA to search for data, and often unreliable (board goes down, crashes, etc). I imagine Google would have some kind of strategy to deal with this issue in the future.

Newsgroups are not bad. Newsgroups are the best thing around! Constant speed of your maximum download speed 24/7, no lines ever, very stable, has just about everything you could ever dream of.

Up until last May yes. MIS block traffic on most NG however select (BORING) one work. They get piss and show MRTG around xmas! We had two people downloading asian fist porn binaries for week on end. How some people watch that stuff is beyond me. A few female on AVI consume their own vomit! GROSS!

This is fact. People don't appreciate how useful it is to have a single immense archive of information. I've solved quite a few PC problems by finding the answers in Usenet posts. And tons of newsgroups exist on subjects which no one has set up a website for. It's the one place accessible to everyone, supported by a tremendous search engine (Google), and immune from "site too busy" issues.

I understand that people who only use computers for entertainment don't appreciate the value of Usenet, but it serves a very useful purpose.
