Not do you use a firewall, antivirus or anything else.
I don't use UAC because I find it annoying and none of the reasons I stated involved anything about networking.

People responded to your post assuming you were using a normal desktop attached to a network or to the internet. If your computer isn't on a network then the question is pointless, so basically you baited people into flaming you for not using UAC and then posted the fact that you were not on a network to make them all look like jackasses.

If your first post had said, "I don't use UAC because I'm not on a network" it would have saved a lot of back and forth.

I hope and assume that you were not intentionally trolling or flamebaiting but I am left a bit confused as to why you didn't say this in the first place.

You assumed that every pc is on a network ? And that is my fault how ?
So in your view the only reason to have UAC is for a pc on a network ?
Interesting.

I honestly didn't think about UAC as a protection against a virus or something on the internet.
I viewed it as an annoyance for things I do daily on that pc like move around system files, create directories and run drivers and applications that vista generally does not like me to run without prompting for UAC.

I'm surprised to see that so many think of it as a replacement for antivirus.

FYI - I do not believe Ventrilo should be triggering UAC. Instead of hitting OK you should investigate. UAC is supposed to make you think. If you are just hitting OK without thinking you might as well turn it off. I suggest thinking.

Ventrillo only works properly when running as a administrator. I find it no big deal to enter my admin password to start it. I wish the developers would fix the problem with Ventrillo so that it will not require admin privileges to operate.

Ventrillo is the only software I use that requires admin privileges to run properly.

When I run Ventrillo it does NOT give a UAC prompt and it works fine. Just to be sure I wasn't trying to trick you, I installed it on the machine I'm typing this from to verify. No prompt.

If you are getting a UAC prompt from Ventrillo then you are doing something differently or Ventrillo is really badly written. There is no need for that app to need an admin token.

No UAC prompts here with Ventrilo either, and I don't have any issues that I'm aware of.

Hm. This leaves some questions then.

Questions for Soonerproud
1. Did you choose the install option for "only me" or "everyone on this computer"?
2. Are you talking about Ventrillo server as opposed to client?
3. Do you remember if it UAC prompted the very first time you ran it before anything was configured?
4. Are you running the latest version?

Maybe there is something in the install options or some odd setting in Vent that causes this. If not you should probably be getting worried.

1. everyone
2. Client
3. No
4. Of course

I have a creative sound card and Ventrilo needs admin access for all the features to work. This includes the ability to set the volume separately for each person in a chat room.

Hm. My answers would be identical and I'm able to do things like set individual volume (or other special effects) yet I get no prompt. I'm *guessing* that Creative is where the fishy smell is coming from. Getting a UAC prompt from Vent is definately not cool. A procmon run might be interesting.

No doubt the two are related. This is going to be the last creative product I will ever own.

I don't use UAC.
But, about the Creative products; I have a Zen Stone w/ Speaker 2GB i bought at walmart for $38. It is about the size of my keyless entry on my car keys & pretty neat. Has a built in speaker, miniUSB, 1/4 earbud, 3-way slider for folder/shuffle/repeat, and a dial for prev/next track pause/play & vol up/down.

Probably the only creative device I've actually liked. 500 songs & 24 hours of playback with the speaker on.

That doesn't sound too bad. It's not so much creative's hardware as their software (as possibly demonstrated by the UAC prompt).

If it had a device driver it would probably give you ear herpes though.

I agree completely, they've put out some decent pieces of hardware across their whole line of products... but their software, I'd be embarrassed to admit working in their software division.

I think it's annoying too, it asks for everything everytime. What's wrong with just using an antivirus regularly and save you the hassle

The two are not the same. Technically antivirus offers much less protection although UACs #1 weakness is user error.
