I've always heard watching TV as its being broadcast (or over cable, or whatever) referred to as 'live'. Or probably more importantly, I don't think I've ever heard anyone referred to it in another way other than the pedantic replies in this thread.

I've only heard "watch TV". If it was specified as being live, the assumption is it's real time, like sports, or a breaking news event. My knowledge predates common DVR usage, so maybe the convention has changed, but when someone says "live TV' to me, I assume it's real time with only a minimal delay for censorship purposes.

Well, pre-dvr that was the assumption. You can say that watching a recorded program is delayed, tivo'ed, dvr'd or time-shifted. However when specifying watching the broadcast its clumsy to say 'not time-shifted' or similar. Live is just what I've heard everyone I know and people in the press use when referring to it. Perhaps it needs its own term. Referring to a live sports program and something just being aired certainly could be confusing. I think on of the reinforcing bits for me is that I use WMC for my DVR and the action to tune something on right now is 'live tv'

as far as I'm aware, "live" is the accepted term for non-time delayed TV.

You can consider yourself "unaware".

LIVE FROM NEW YORK... IT'S SATURDAAAAAAAAAAAAY NIGHT!"

Did you think it was actually taped on a Tuesday?

live-viewing tv versus live-filming tv?

this thread kind of astounds me; within the context of time-shifted viewing versus non, I've never heard non-time-shifted-viewing referred to as anything other than "live" before this thread.

my Tivo remote even has a "LIVE TV" button for when I want to shift from watching dvr'd programs to whatever is being currently broadcast over the cable.

my old Cablevision DVR had a "LIVE" button as well:

This is like some kid coming along and explaining that Outer Space doesn't really mean Outer Space anymore and it just means the space outside your house.

Live = REAL TIME and has since RADIO was invented. Imagine if your little remote had to print out ORIGINALLY AIRED PROGRAMMING over that button."Live" is just them being lazy. It's still RECORDED somewhere and not broadcast in REAL TIME. It's filmed in a studio somewhere months ago and broadcast LATER.

Again our younger generation fails us

Here's a recent cultural reference that may help:

You want it to be one way, but it's the other way - Marlo Stanfield.

sometimes, the same words can refer to two different, but similar things.

in your example, live = live-filming (eg: this show is being filmed right now, as we're watching it)

in this context, we're talking about live-broadcasting (eg: this show is being broadcasted right now, as we're watching it)... I feel like I've provided plenty of examples to illustrate that this is an acceptable use of the term by nearly everyone in the world except like 3 ATOT'ers.

1) "live" TV is anything that is watched when it first airs. anyone who thinks otherwise is a moran

2) i watch 2 shows live. GOT and BB. and thats it. i hardly watch sports because most of the time they are not worth watching just like everything else on tv

Like a lot of other people I do it occasionally and then it's mostly sports. Sometimes I watch the local news at 6pm to.

The only thing my cable line connects to is my modem. No TV here. Don't want and don't care.

I dropped my cable service over two years ago. I only watch discs and commercial-free streaming.

Broadcast TV spends almost a third of every hour (17 minutes) showing you commercials. Why should I bother with that?

For a TV show you can watch 3 episodes commercial-free in just a little more time than 2 spam-filled broadcast episodes, and you also can pause when you want and pick the time to watch.
