<< (and for those who don't we have laws to try and cover the bases of people too stupid to look out for themselves >>

its morons like yourself who think the govt is responsible for the care and feeding of its "citizens"...as if we can't think for ourselves...and in the 25 years I have been driving, I havn't been in any major accident...why?? because I drive defensively and have avoided accidents in the past with my driving skills...as for any future accidents, I am making an informed choice by not wearing a seatbelt, again my choice so you can take the stupid remark and shove up your ass, as for the seatbelt, for myself only,it does pose a risk to my safety...(i won't go into an explaination for personal and medical reasons)so you can take your liberalist views and ideas and shove them where the sun doesn't shine ...once again I really couldn't care less for your opinion on my choice

Always. I grew up wearing it, so I'm completely used to it. I feel like something is out of place if I'm not wearing it.

That having been said, even if I didn't want to wear it I would. In Oregon it's illegal to drive or ride in a car without seatbelts (if one is available). If I have a passenger that is under either 16 or 18 (I don't remember) I can get ticketed for their not wearing a seatbelt, & if I'm not wearing one I can get one. Passengers over the age will be ticketed for not wearing one as well.

I've had enough experiences where the seatbelt kept me out of danger that I will always wear one.

<< I am making an informed choice by not wearing a seatbelt >>

Here are some figures from a 1996 Maine study on the seat belt usage/non-usage and injury:

Outcome - Odds of injury for those unbelted compared to those belted
Any injury - 1.32
EMS transport, hospitalized or died - 1.57
Hospitalized or died - 2.2
Died - 2.34
Hospitalized or died with a head injury - 2.79

In this study, seat belts reduced the risk of any injury by 24% and death by 57%. Seat belts not only reduced the risk of injury but had a greater impact on reducing the risk of the more serious types of injury. Utlimately the choice is our own, but the facts are also clear.

In addition to mithrandir2001 stats if you think, kamiam that defensive driving will allow you to avoid 100% of all major accidents you're dumber than you sound. Why don't you read what michaeld just wrote for one example. Don't call me liberal just because I'm rightfully calling those who don't wear seatbelts idiots...ok perhaps they are not idiots as a whole. Maybe you're a smart person, but in this particular case your actions are idiotic.

I've been in a couple small accidents, and one major accident. Hitting a tree at high speed is a good way to get thrown through the windshield, so I'm glad me and all my brothers and sisters (who were in the car while I was driving) wear our seat belts.

I read your post and I know it's your choice but I simply can't understand why anybody, knowing full well how much seatbelts decrease the chance of injury/fatality, would not wear them. Is it really so inconvenient to put that strap on each time? It takes about 2 seconds.

Yes.

As for the argument of driving defensively etc. being a reason for not wearing seatbelts; the best drivers in the world (professionals) wouldn't think of starting their engines without those belts on.

no one ever said that was the reason, did they...as for "professional" drivers I would suspect they are "mandated" to wear them not only by the insurance Co's but their employeers as well

btw...if I were racing cars as I did when younger, I would wear one...figure that one out armchair psycho-analyst's:disgust:

Well perhaps it was snowy roads or bobber's car had a mechanical failure, or perhaps he had to swerve to avoid hitting an elk!

I wear seatbelts all the time. Isn't it clear that the advantages of wearing one is so much more than not wearin one? There's much more of a chance dieing/getting injured from not wearing a selt belt... so what's there to make some people not want to wear one? Just peference?

it's so easy to wear it after you do for years. you start to dislike the fell of sliding around a little on turns when a seat belt keeps yo' ass secure in one spot.

<< Always wear seatbelts. I just think it's smart. It isn't any trouble since it is pretty much a habbit. I put it on before I turn the engine. >>

I?d like to honestly say yes, always, but sometimes I forget. I get mad at myself for it. Since I started delivering pizzas, what used to be automatic now is sometimes forgotten. All I?d need is for someone to sideswipe me while they?re trying to run a red light, and I?d be on the pavement. I?d rather not die at work.

A seat belt saved me from serious injury once. Thanks to the belt, all I had was whiplash and a sore shoulder, instead of a possible bloody face, concussion, etc.

It makes no sense to me. That's what I've been saying, where are your sensibilities when it comes to choosing to not wear a seatbelt?

You have every right to choose that course of action. What I'm wondering is, what is your reasoning for not doing it. You do have a good reason don't you?

I can't believe you people are smart enough to use a computer and yet don't wear a seatbelt. It truly boggles the mind. I'm 23 and have been in 7 car accidents. Two of which my head would have been best friends with the windshield if not for my seatbelt. For those with any loved ones this is simply irresponsible and I think you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Hey!! Come off your holier than thou high horse. If your so smart why so many accidents, your fault or not?! If I were riding with you I sure as heck would wear one!

I wear it when i feel like it and more power to me!!!

Like I said: I was driving in only one accident and although driving skills of myself or those I'm a passenger of has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with this discussion in the least just for the record the responsibility for the time I was driving was placed half and half on me and the other car.

Nobody should be so foolish as to think that their own driving skills can cover all bases for accidents in all cases. You can be defensive all you like, but you can't control a car that may cross traffic. You can't control somebody jumping a red light. You can't control your being rear-ended if you're sitting at lights with people in front of you.

I can't even believe that this is even being debated. Some common sense things that I'd taken for granted that everyone in the civilized world knew to do apparently are not as obvious as I'd once though.

always, and i also make sure that person in the passenger seat wears their's as well. i do not make the people in the back seats wear theirs, leave it up to them, because mine is a two door coupe and in case i get in an accident (hasnt happened yet ) i want to make sure they can get out easily.... and being in the back seat of a wrecked car, i'm assuming the only thing on their minds will be to get the hell out of there and they'll be trying to get the front seat forward so that they can get out....
