Do your interactions on internet forums negatively affect your life?

So much negativity, and so much rage. Seems like these things are good mostly for fighting with one another, and only occasionally for actually accomplishing something or having a worthwhile discussion.

I often wonder how it affects my life. I assume its not on a surface level, or on any kind of overt level. But everything we do affects who we are as individuals in some way, however big or small.

I get aggravated by a lot of the stupidity and garbage, but I usually just close the browser down at that point. I'm not sure whether Facebook or these forums piss me off more; I guess it's a toss up. There is a ton of negativity, viciousness, and nonsense out there. It makes me wonder if people are really generally good like the saying goes.

It's a good idea to find sites which restore your faith that the internet was indeed a good idea. ArsTechnica, The Astronomy Picture of the Day, and Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal usually do it for me.

It's what you make of it. You can either learn a lot by being humble and honest or be a know-it-all for certain topics and respond to everything you disagree with and give yourself stress. Veterans do a lot less of the latter.

Yes, AT and other forums have ruined my life. My kids are surly, my wife is distant, my pets disdainful, my indoor plants won't grow, and my car exceeds emissions requirements.

I'm an active member of about 9 forums. Five of them are work related, one is for video game discussion, one is for car discussion, one is for serious computer discussions, and this place is for reading the crazy hate posts. I tried to join in more here but there's just so much hate.

I don't think forums have had a net negative impact. I'd have to say more of a positive net impact, as I get to see other people's perspectives from time to time. (Frequently, I also get to see how fools think. )


But, even as recently as last night, I couldn't think of any truly beneficial aspect of Facebook, other than getting to see family photos. I found myself increasingly annoyed by the shares of several idiots. I've grown tired of correcting the same things over and over. E.g., the moon will appear 5 times its normal size during the full moon. This December has 5 Mondays, 5 Tuesdays, and 5 Wednesdays, "which won't happen again for another 387 years." It goes beyond gullibility to believe crap like that - you have to have almost zero critical thinking skills. And, that annoys the hell out of me. Though, I balanced the annoyance with the satisfaction of unfriending several idiots last night.
