Do Zombies have to eat to survive?

This is a question I have long wondered about. Do Zombies need to eat? If they don't eat long enough will they just collapse due to lack of energy?
If Zombies don't need to eat, then where to they get their energy from?

Sorry for so basic a Zombie question. If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have studied up on Zombies more.

there must be some biological reason behind the compulsion to eat human flesh, so I'd assume that there are likewise negative consequences to not doing so.

Yeah, I seem to remember that in 28 days. However, in Resident Evil they seem to still be up and about in desolate areas. Which leads me to believe they don't have to eat.

what magnets have is a chemical property, humans are made in such a way that they have to eat to get energy.
Plus its also a scientific law, that energy cannot be created, it can only be transformed. (example, food to energy, sunlight to plants life, wood to fire, etc)

Eeating isnt as much as an issue as drinking. We know and seen zombies eat human flesh but I have never seen a zombie drink water which you can't function without for any sustainable period of time.

28 days later zombies or any other 'infected' virus like zombies require food to stay alive. In 28 days later they would die without eating. I don't think it necessarily had to be human flesh, but they were filled with too much rage to get food from other sources.

Romero type zombies could live virtually indefinitely without eating humans.

Finally Return of the living dead type zombies could also live indefinitely. When interviewing the zombies they said they had a great pain which was only eased by eating BRAINS....

I haven't exactly seen them drink blood, they usually just tear flesh off a carcass and eat it. The speed at which their body dries from dehydration is faster than the blood they consume anyway. At least with eating, once a day would possibly last you indefinitely, one small drink a day would not.

From Day of the Dead it was explained that the Romero type zombies brain is shut down save for the primary instinct to feed. For some reason, they only want human flesh.

After a period of time the zombie does cease to function as the body simply rots away.

But they don't eat for nourishment.
