newegg send me a dead opty 148 and they wont let me send it back to them. I guess I have to go through AMD, has anyone done this before? If so how was AMD to deal with? Also will they give me trouble because I wasnt using it in a server?

They will likely ask you what specs on your machine you were using. If you say it was on a standard socket 939 motherboard (i.e. not a "server" grade) they may likely say you're out of luck since they aren't supported.

You will also get a little lecture bout how Opterons are almost never DOA. I know, I had to call one in the other day

If you used a 3rd party heatsink/thermal grease, you're out of luck as well.

They are quite stringent, as far as I remember.

I think I'd call newegg and insist that they at LEAST exchange it for you, providing of course that you didn't somehow void the warranty.

Well of course the green material they package it in was broken and the cpu was sliding around a lil bit but I figured it should be ok. So I opened it and gave it a whirl and am pretty sure it is DOA all I did was take it out, put it in the socket with factory hsf and fired it up to no avail. Im going to try it one more time in this rig to see if it will post, then ill try newegg, then ill try amd if i have to. I couldnt even name a server board or anything about one.... Sucks when u get non-working computer stuff.

k well heres what i got now, threw it in the rig in my sig and I get no post but I get 3 beeps so it sounds like it may work yet. but does anyone know what the 3 beeps mean in a Asrock 939Dual? I tried it without the ram too and still no post.

UPDATE!
Success the cpu is fine and I got it to work in my rig by trying corsair value ram instead of the g.skill. But still the same results in my other setup, going to start from scratch tonight and see if I can get it to work, I have a RMA number with newegg for the board if needed, but the board seems functional, but atleast I know my cpu is good.

Did you reset your cmos before putting it in? A DOA Opteron is very rare!

yeah did that in both boards and I put an update above your post that the Opty 148 is alive and Im gonna start from scratch putting that rig together and hopefully I missed something maybe a grounding issue or something. Thank god I didnt have to RMA to AMD with the opty. Weird how the 148 wouldnt boot up with my G.skill ram though but it did with the corsair.
