Doberman vs Rottweiler

I plan on moving into my first house this year and I plan to buy a couple dogs. It might not be for a little while after that (might be longer) until I'm settled cause it isn't fair to the dogs.

But a lingering question on my mind is which breed would you suggest between Doberman (5th smartest breed) and Rottweiler (9th smartest breed)?

Rottweiler read like they pack more muscle and have more weight to them. That true? Would a Rottweiler be a better guard than Doberman?

Its a few factors (friendliness, intelligence and strength) that I'm weighing. I've had retrievers all my life but they couldn't do squat but bark if someone ever broke in.

Me personally? I'd get a german shepard if I wanted something to gaurd the home. They take to children and friends better than the other dogs, but are still very good about protecting your home.

I don't know what I think about rotties being the 9th smartest. The ones I've been around were pretty dumb. And lazy. And they didn't like male strangers(to them) AT ALL. I've known of a couple rotties attacking male friends of the owner. And if I needed to restrain them there wouldn't be a chance in hell that I could. Too strong.

Not a lot of experience around Dobermans. So I can't say much.

Yeah I considered German Sheppards. Nice dogs but I figured one of the other two would be stronger in the home defense area.

As for kids I'm not going to have any for at least another 15 years

BTW vi_edit how tall are you and how much you weigh? Just trying to get a picture when you said you couldn't restrain one.

I'm 6' 185 pounds. The rottie I was trying to hold back was probably 125 pounds. It took A LOT of work to keep him from running. And he was just anxious...not trying to maul someone.

I honestly don't know which would make a better guard dog. I'd be willing to guess more people are scared of Rottweilers bucause they have thicker frames.

My grandfather had a Chesepeke Bay Retriever, he was a great guard dog, very protective but not dangerous unless you weren't supposed to be in the house
My best friend had a black German Shephard, very good guard dog - he was strong and very alert. He was even trained to go for the ankles if someone was running away from him, he used to nip at us when we were playing around, he'd never break skin but you could tell if he was going for a burgler he'd have him down in a second.

Rotweiler= Doberman on steroids.

Rotweilers are big and VERY muscular, I once saw one throwing around a car tire like most dogs do a Frisbee. They can be very good dogs if properly trained, if untrained, or what I would consider improperly trained,....dangerous.

If you want a dog to do more then bark at an intruder,... I hope you have a good lawyer.

I think I'm different than others in that I was more intimidated by Dobermans for some reason. I knew a few Rottweilers when I delivered papers as a kid and they were pretty nice to me (never bit me or mauled).

Something about a Dobermans frame intimidated me. Just the way they kinda do that prance. And when they bare their teeth it looks more crazy/serious than a Rottweiler.

I won't let them out of a fenced in area. Always grew up watching our dogs. Even when they go outside I will stand by and watch them for half an hour. Never once have our dogs been loose (outside of a fenced in area without a leash).

If you mean when they attack an intruder...if its just that (an intruder) they wouldn't have any repercussion in my house?

So its kinda like that 6'5" 200 lb muscle guy going to beat you up and the 5'10" crazy looking guy with the mismatched eyes and pale composure. With the 6'5" guy, you're gonna get beat up, but you don't know wtf the 5'10" guy is gonna do to you.

How often do you have other male friends come over? And do you have a wife/girl friend that lives with you?

We had a doberman to guard our summer house when I was a kid.

He was trained to extreme, so he was extremely cool around my family and our friends but damn you would have need luck if you are an intruder.

Hah exactly. Something about Dobermans just made me nervous. Don't get the wrong idea--I never pet/played or attempted to go near the Rottweilers but they seemed more controlled "hey you are on my propery so I'm barking at you" and I just knew not to bug 'em. With Dobermans I really got nervous and they seemed like crazy in the head.

Every Friday and Saturday we have rotating beer night. No girlfriend who will live with me. Was thinking about renting the basement out but I don't know if thats possible come to think about the dogs.

I'll do it properly and if I can't I won't get them. I'm not just going to rush out and buy them.

Are they really that big on domain/control? Geeze Maybe I'm better with a decent alarm system and a .45

Personally I'm more scared of rottweleirs. Theres two of them a few houses down and those things are savages. They get MAD whenever I walk past them w/ my dogs. Even one my dogs is scared of them (starts running faster). The rots start turning on each other when they realize they can't get out. And man are they LOUD.

There used to be a doberman at another place a few houses down. He would bark and was intimidating and all, but when he was in the presence of his owner it was entirely calm and obedient. Seemed like a great dog.

Oh and does anyone know how both breeds get along together (if you bought a set of brothers). With retrievers I've had they rarely assert dominance with serious fighting but I'd imagine its more than likely with these types of dogs I'm talking about.

I just know three seperate rottie owners that have had issues with their dogs going after friends that show up when the owners aren't around. Not to say they can't be big teddy bears too, but to me it just isn't worth the fear of a 125-140 pound ball of muscle running after a buddy.

I'm biased though. I've really had a lot of fun messing around some friends shepards. They are just really cool dogs.

My uncle had a pair of Dobermans. A brother and sister. They were inseperable.

They're are the toughest dogs you'll ever love, and one can kill a dobie or a rott so quick it'll make your head spin. I've had 3, and I have the vet bills from owners of rotts & dobies to back up my claim.

They're smaller, and a whole lot more of a chick magnet. "Oh look, it's Spuds from the beer commercials."

They're still using them to fight bears in Pakistan: Bear fighting

They're pretty formidable, you can get your hands on a bigger dogs, these guys are shorter, compact & know no pain. A few centuries of breeding can do that to an animal. Also the white color is a deterrent to humans for some reason.

My ultra freindly mutt scares the hell out of people cause he happy barks at them when they walk by the fence. It doesn't take much. Most people don't seem to know much about dogs. My german shepard who isn't super friendly towards strangers is all I need.

Nah get a Chow instead, they look cuddly but are absolutely viscous when provoked. My mates got 2, he had a bloke try to set 2 alsations on his male, put it like this both alsations were running off tail between legs PDQ
