Seriously? He deliberately caused the accident. You understand this, don't you?

Driving down bike in car =! people running into car on bike

You understand this, don't you?

By the way I never said he was right, simply replying to a false post. Put your nerd rage away.

I'm replying against my better judgement as I think you're being willfully ignorant on this...but have you actually read any of the articles? He deliberately caused the cyclists to run into his car. It's not complicated, but I think you just don't understand.

Try not to paint all bikers with the same brush. Most of the problem bikers are delivery guys, not people going to work or exercising. I biked to work in Manhattan for years, though 99% of my commute was down the west side bike path. I've also driven in Manhattan for years and know how bad drivers in NYC are, mostly due to stress from the traffic, but that's not an excuse to drive recklessly.

Same problem in Minneapolis. I watch these idiots fly through red lights, go the wrong way on the streets, and nearly run over people walking. Nearly all the bicycle car accidents are the fault of bikers not obeying the rules of the road in Minneapolis.

The sentence is a little much. Maybe 2-3 years and his medical license revoked. I'm still ok with the 5 years though.

Screw all you bicycle haters. It's a cheap, green, healthy form of transportation. You really expect them to follow every rule of the road like a 4000lb automobile?

Maybe if the bikes hadnt been riding so damn close and payed attention, they wouldnt have smashed into the car. Had things worked out only slightly different, they would be getting sued for damages to his car.

Since EVERYONE on the road is supposed to be responsible, and pedestrians and bikers risk more, I think they should be at least as accountable for following the rules of the road as a car, and use good sense on top of that.

And how did they know the guy hit his brakes just to be mean? Because a cop said so? OHHHH MAN! A cop said so, which means this guy goes to jail for 5 years. Brilliant. That sounds like some good shit for the supreme court.

Looking at what we have before us, I dont think this is an issue of who was actually right or wrong, I think it was about appeasing the ultra-liberals of southern california. The kind that dont believe in personal responsibility and think either the government should pay for their mistakes, or failing that, the government should find a private citizen to punish. Anyone, just long as it isnt them. Since the goverment would rather not admit fault, I guess we all know who's gonna get it.

Had the police been enforcing traffic laws properly and had the courts actually punished people on a regular basis, this could have been avoided. But since its long been established that traffic laws have little to do with public safety and more to do with extra income for the government, I dont think that will ever happen either.

Fuck. Now I'm getting of on another rant, and I dont have the energy.

It's hilarious how many times this has been repeated and then a response given in this thread. Do people not read the thread before posting?

a) They weren't following him. They were in front of him, he passed them and then immediately slammed on brakes.
b) They know he hit his breaks to be mean because HE told the cop that he did it to teach them a lesson.

He about clipped them as he passed too. I don't care what your major malfunction is, you don't play games with a car. He deliberately assaulted them with a deadly weapon.

I just hope there was more evidence presented in court that proved more conclusive than what was described in this article. 5 years is tough for something that could have legitimately been an accident but I'm not privy to the exact facts of the case.

If you actually read the OP, you wouldn't have wasted the energy to make such an incorrect post.

Hey guys maybe if those bicyclists weren't following so close, amirite

Seriously, why are people still arguing this? Doctor was a jackass and a criminal. Five years is totally just, considering he intentionally caused the accident and could have easily killed these two. There is no defending his actions.

It's STILL brake-checking...and I've read many replies on these boards in tailgating threads where people think passing someone then brake-checking is fine.

I certainly flash my brake lights at persistent tailgaters, but without really slowing down. I don't do it to be a dick, and I don't do it to 'teach a lesson'. I do it to bring the attention of the distracted driver behind me back to the road. It's a purely selfish act, because I don't want to have to rehab from whiplash injuries.

Deliberately hitting the brakes and slowing down rapidly to 'teach someone a lesson' is absolutely retarded. In fact, ANY attempt to teach another driver a 'lesson' is a bullshit excuse for wanting to act out aggression and/or frustration.

Think about it, try to remember the last time some asshole driver cut you off, slammed on the brakes, and made you think 'wow, that was completely my fault I'm really glad he took the time to teach me a lesson.'

In this case, the driver cut off the cyclists and slammed on his breaks, maybe not with the intent of causing injury, but certainly in a malicious and reckless manner.

He might not have received such a sentence if he'd kept his mouth shut at the time, but frankly, he got what he deserved.

Wish they'd ban cars instead. I can't remember the number of times cars have cut me off without signaling, blown thru red lights/stop signs, etc...

basically we need to ban idiots from driving or riding anything
also give bicycles license plates.

and bicycle "driving" licenses to ensure that they know the proper rules of the road.

Cars are due a greater right-of-way by bicyclists, not only because the auto is larger, heavier, and can inflict more damage, but also because we auto drivers, whether by our license fees/taxes or fuel taxes, pay for the roadway. bicyclists, by any property/sales taxes might pay a portion...but a much smaller portion of the costs of building and maintaining the roadway.

Yes. We DO own the road.

Bicycles also cause less wear to the roads, and zero environmental damage unless you count improper tire disposal.

At trial, Thompson said that he and other local residents were angry because some bicyclists were ignoring stop signs or riding abreast, impeding cars on a narrow road.

I'm a biker, but some bikers are jerks. There's a few in my town who run red lights and don't obey other automotive restrictions and signage and really leave a bad impression on everyone, including myself. There's nothing to tick you off at someone quite like having to slam on your brakes when going through an intersection because some biker decided he didn't need to obey the rules. Even kids on bikes know to stop at lights. On the flip side, most bikers are good bikers (at least here, we have a very active biking community) and obey the rules, but you don't notice them because they're not causing trouble - you only notice the jerks who are causing problems.

Plus, you really take your life into your hands if you bike alongside cars. You're an unprotected meatbag in a street full of 2,000 pound metal bricks hurtling down the road at 50 miles per hour. I quit riding on the main roads (at least during busy hours) because people just don't pay attention. I can't tell you how many times I've almost been hit because of people talking on their cell phone, putting on lipstick, drinking coffee, etc.

The last straw for me was a lady on her cell phone in a big Subaru wagon - she actually hit my workout pants (luckily missed my legs by a few millimeters) because she was so close and didn't even notice because she was so engrossed in her conversion on her phone. My buddy was ahead of me and got run off the road and into a wall, and she just drove off - not even noticing. So it's "bike at your own risk" in my book. There's plenty of backroads to go on so you don't have to worry about much traffic, but you always worry about somebody not paying attention and just cruising through a stop sign and into you. Had it happen more than once, unfortunately (never had a bad accident yet luckily), so I usually go out really early in the morning around 4-5am when no one is awake to get my ride in, or take a bike path.

I wish the government would put in dedicated bike lanes - seperate even from walking lanes and sidewalks. The double bike/walk lanes are still tough because people don't pay attention and will walk in front of you without realizing it, even when you yell "on your left!". Bottom line is that biking on roads and stuff is dangerous, and people don't pay attention, so you have to be careful.

Pretty much. Bike hatred is as much a constant as fatty hatred on ATOT. In EVERY bike/car accident thread I've seen, no matter how overwhelming the evidence that the driver is at fault, there is always a dedicated core who will defend him.

LOL. This thread is full of fail. Did anyone read the article?

There is so much hate towards bikers in this thread. The doctor was completely in the wrong. Everyone know this.

If you truly think what the doctor did was justified in *ANY* way shape or form, then you are insane.
