At trial, Thompson said that he and other local residents were angry because some bicyclists were ignoring stop signs or riding abreast, impeding cars on a narrow road.
I'm a biker, but some bikers are jerks. There's a few in my town who run red lights and don't obey other automotive restrictions and signage and really leave a bad impression on everyone, including myself. There's nothing to tick you off at someone quite like having to slam on your brakes when going through an intersection because some biker decided he didn't need to obey the rules. Even
kids on bikes know to stop at lights. On the flip side, most bikers are good bikers (at least here, we have a very active biking community) and obey the rules, but you don't notice them because they're not causing trouble - you only notice the jerks who
are causing problems.
Plus, you really take your life into your hands if you bike alongside cars. You're an unprotected meatbag in a street full of 2,000 pound metal bricks hurtling down the road at 50 miles per hour. I quit riding on the main roads (at least during busy hours) because people just don't pay attention. I can't tell you how many times I've almost been hit because of people talking on their cell phone, putting on lipstick, drinking coffee, etc.
The last straw for me was a lady on her cell phone in a big Subaru wagon - she actually hit my workout pants (luckily missed my legs by a few millimeters) because she was so close and didn't even notice because she was so engrossed in her conversion on her phone. My buddy was ahead of me and got run off the road and into a wall, and she just drove off - not even noticing. So it's "bike at your own risk" in my book. There's plenty of backroads to go on so you don't have to worry about much traffic, but you always worry about somebody not paying attention and just cruising through a stop sign and into you. Had it happen more than once, unfortunately (never had a bad accident yet luckily), so I usually go out really early in the morning around 4-5am when no one is awake to get my ride in, or take a bike path.
I wish the government would put in dedicated bike lanes - seperate even from walking lanes and sidewalks. The double bike/walk lanes are still tough because people don't pay attention and will walk in front of you without realizing it, even when you yell "on your left!". Bottom line is that biking on roads and stuff is dangerous, and people don't pay attention, so you have to be careful.
