Doctors Are Some of The Rudest People

I work the Help Desk for a major hospital system and each time I get a call from a doctor I am prepared for the worst. I got one today from a nurse who's first words were "I have an irate doctor. Can you hold?" So she transfers me to the doctor and I ask how I can help him. He immediately goes on this tirade regarding why am I not aware of this issue yada yada. I apologize and ask him to explain the problem to me. The whole conversation was just him being an ass. It's a problem for him to spell his last name. It's a problem to ask him what application he is logging into. It's a problem for him to give me any information whatsoever. He would keep making comments about what I was saying and what I was asking him to some other person in the background the entire time. Seriously, I wanted to reach through the phone. I just don't understand why people can't show any common decency to other people.

You do know that health care has the worst systems and software on the planet right? Aside from many physicians mistaking themselves for God, many folks just want to rant at someone who has no authority to make their lives any worse than they already are.

I usually apologize to the help desk when I start ranting (saying it is not them that are to blame).

But every so often you get an idiot on the phone that cannot seem to help you unless you follow the script, asking you the same questions you told them you tried and did not work (have you reset the system? Have you powered down and restarted? Have you closed your eyes, patted your head and rubbed your tummy on one foot while singing "Glory glory hallelujah?").

Then I get mad at the tool.

There is an unprecedented amount of viciousness/rudeness/greediness/selfishness/lack of self control in our society.

Gone are the days of politeness, respect, sincerity. Communal harmony is extremely difficult to come by.

Over 10-years ago I used to work for a company that sold medical billing software. They also sold hardware. So they had about 3 techs that would go onsite to doctor's offices and setup the computers for them and network everything together. I was one of those onsite techs. I went to a jobsite with the senior tech person and we where swapping out about 10-computers at a doctors office. The senior guy had asked the office manager where we could put all the empty boxes as we swapped computers and the monitors. This process generates a lot of cardboard. She had told us to stack the boxes in a corridor in front of the back door to the office since nobody enters through the door. We are in the middle of the project working under a desk and we hear a crash and bang down the hall. A doctor had decided to come through this back door and the door opened into the office. He opened the door and just went through, well the door opened partially and then banged against the boxes and went back in his face. He was a red head and his face was completely red and he went irate in the back office, swearing up a storm as nurses are scattering in front of him and the office manager is trying to calm him down. We hear all this commition and I get up from under the desk. The next second I see a big monitor box come flying into the room and lands on the senior guy, the doctor swears at both of use and storms out. The senior guy gets pissed, I was new so I just kept my mouth shut. We look out the corridor and the senior doctor(who owns the office) takes the angry doctor aside and basically from what I can tell gives him a lecture about proper behavior in his office. About 5 minutes later the angry doctor sulks into the room where we are working and apologizes to both of us and goes in his way. I heard later from nurses and office manager that the doctor was usually a big A$%hole and this was the first time they ever heard him apologize to anyone.

You have no idea how many problems I've solved just by asking people that. I cant tell how tech savy you are over the phone.

Next time when you pick up the phone, say "Hello, this is the help desk." Then when he starts going ape shit into the phone talk over him and say "Please leave a message after the beep and we'll get back to you. Beep."

Seriously though, I couldn't be a doctor and the job is stressful. Well, I could be a dermatologist. But not like a real doctor.

I'm glad I don't have to take that. Not long after I started practicing a woman came to me with a prescription for Compazine suppositories. As you know it's twice a day dosing. She was in her third trimester and this ass wrote for every 4 hours. NFW.

So I call him up and politely informed him of the correct dosage. He said that he had been practicing for 20 years and no one ever questioned him before. I said he should keep on practicing because he hasn't got it right yet then hung up. I told her there was no way I was going to fill it, explained why and told her that although I couldn't tell her what to do I would have told my wife to toss that loser before he killed her.

You should have made the doctor wait for like 15-20 minutes on the phone and then talk to him for 5 minutes and tell him the whole time that he's wrong. And don't forget to charge him up the ass for it too.

Next time you go in for a doctor visit start swearing and cursing at them when they don't know what is wrong with you.

Make sure you refuse to answer any of their questions that might help them make a diagnosis though.

You can thank hospital administration for coddling the doctors and never enforcing anything on them, let alone tell them they are wrong. Surgeons/Specialists are "revenue creators" and heaven forbid we slap them on the wrist for their actions/words and they threaten to take their services to the hospital across the street.

In five years here I know of one single doctor that's been fired. And that was after a very high profile family had someone under that doc's management was given incredibly horrible care and they threated to sue anyone and everyone who stepped foot in that room.
