June 21, 2009

Public officials aren?t supposed to change their minds. But I firmly believe that it?s important to keep learning. Last week, while I was in Connecticut meeting with members of the gay and lesbian community from across the state, I had the opportunity to tell them what I?ve learned about marriage, and about equality.

While I?ve long been for extending every benefit of marriage to same-sex couples, I have in the past drawn a distinction between a marriage-like status (?civil unions?) and full marriage rights.

The reason was simple: I was raised to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. And as many other Americans have realized as they?ve struggled to reconcile the principle of fairness with the lessons they learned early in life, that?s not an easy thing to overcome.

But the fact that I was raised a certain way just isn?t a good enough reason to stand in the way of fairness anymore.

The Connecticut Supreme Court, of course, has ruled that such a distinction holds no merit under the law. And the Court is right.

I believe that effective leaders must be able and willing to grow and change over their service. I certainly have during mine ? and so has the world. Thirty-five years ago, who could have imagined that we?d have an African-American President of the United States?

My young daughters are growing up in a different reality than I did. Our family knows many same-sex couples ? our neighbors in Connecticut, members of my staff, parents of their schoolmates. Some are now married because the Connecticut Supreme Court and our state legislature have made same-sex marriage legal in our state.

But to my daughters, these couples are married simply because they love each other and want to build a life together. That?s what we?ve taught them. The things that make those families different from their own pale in comparison to the commitments that bind those couples together.

And, really, that?s what marriage should be. It?s about rights and responsibilities and, most of all, love.

I believe that, when my daughters grow up, barriers to marriage equality for same-sex couples will seem as archaic, and as unfair, as the laws we once had against inter-racial marriage.

And I want them to know that, even if he was a little late, their dad came down on the right side of history.

I have always been proud of my long record fighting for the civil rights of the LGBT community. I?ve co-sponsored legislation to strengthen hate crime laws and end discrimination in the workplace. I?ve spoken out against ?don?t ask, don?t tell? and always supported equal rights for domestic partnerships.

But I am also proud to now count myself among the many elected officials, advocates, and ordinary citizens who support full marriage equality for same-sex couples.

I understand that even those who oppose discrimination might continue to find it hard to re-think the definition of marriage they grew up with. I know it was for me.

But many of the things we must do to make our union more perfect ? whether it?s fighting for decades to reform our health care system or struggling with a difficult moral question ? are hard. They take time. And they require that, when you come to realize that something is right, you be unafraid to stand up and say it.

That?s the only way our history will progress along that long arc towards justice.

Anyone else think Obama will likely be the last Democrat running for president who didn't support same sex marriage? There's always the chance he'll shift before or during his 2nd term, but opening himself up to the flip-flop card is probably not high on his list of to-dos at the moment.

Dodd provides a good rhetorical model for others looking to plausibly shift, and manages not to call anyone a bigot. The thing is, I wouldn't be shocked if by 2016 we see a good number of small government republicans agreeing with Dodd.

I dont think Dodd gets through the next election. But that is regardless of his stance on marriage.

I am personally agnostic on this whole debate. But will say the people have entrusted the govt to regulate marriage. The people will change the rules when they feel like it. Hard to say when but 2016 may be a bit soon if one of the most liberal states in the country is still willing to bar gay marriage.

Always funny to see a far right-winger attack Obama from the left. It's a clear indication that they their beef with him is not on ideological grounds - just an unhealthy obsession/hatred.

I think it comes from Republicans being brainwashed into believing there is only one possible correct policy, and its the one the Party puts forth, and anyone with a different position must be mentally ill or a traitor.
That may sound sarcastic, but it really doesn explain how they see the world.

well, let's see... his own justice department launched a defense of DOMA that invoked incest, he believes marriage is between a man and a woman, and despite his words in the campaign, he's taken no steps on two major major issues that he said he would (DOMA and DADT... in fact, he still persists in persecuting gays in the military when it would be easily within his power to stop it even without formally striking down DA/DT).

bigoted and hateful might be a bit harsh, but he's a far, far cry from the "fierce advocate" he promised to me.

True, though a fierce advocate in words, he's not yet in been in action, but it's only been 5 months into one of the most difficult and trying times in our history. DoJ defended DOMA in the suit because they are required to defend laws that are on the books. DADT is also congressional passed law and while he might try to stop such firings with executive power, it would be against the current law and just as much of an abuse of executive power as I criticized Bush for wielding across the board.

The executive order he signed last week was an insufficient nod to his promises, but all I can say is give him some time. While it's unfair and unjust that gays are not yet equal in every aspect under the law, they are not languishing in slavery or demanding immediate relief from a violent oppression. The status quo, as inequal as it is, is about 100x better than just 10 years ago. Gays are facing discrimination and it needs to be righted, but give the guy some room, he's got an awful lot on his shoulders at the moment.

If he hasn't moved significantly on any of these issues during his first term, I'll agree he betrayed his promise. But I'm willing to give him more than 5 months on issues of graver and more immediate concern, and expect to see movement from his admin in the coming years on issues perceived to be of less than urgent consequence.

We've been screwed in the name of political expediency not ideology.

I find the arguments that he is too busy to address ANY of these issues in the slightest to be rather weak.

Dodd does everything wrong. We know this. If you had to pick a captain for your failboat Dodd is a great choice.

That was a well put, well thought out, and intelligent argument .... you do realize you're posting in P&N right? These kind of arguments have no place here!

But, seriously. I think you're absolutely right. I have some faith in Obama and don't expect him to fix the entire country within his first year and the rest of the world before the end of his first term. It took a full 8 years of some of the most vile rule this country has ever had to fuck us up this bad, I can give Obama more than a few months to fix it.

And yes, I do realize that DADT was passed under Clinton and I think it was a cheap compromise. Though it was better than the before total ban on homosexuals in the military.

I think there's just a subset of people currently in society who have a seriously fucked up obsession with the guy. I work with a few of these people, and they will use any excuse to bring him up and start bitching about him in unrelated daily conversation. Naturally these people are socially inept and it usually ends up in awkward silences and raised eyebrows, even when among other republicans. I just don't think these people have gotten over the fact that a black guy named Barack Obama is their president and their hatred has turned into an obsession. It's pretty sad really.

Change republican to democrat, black to white, and Barack Obama to George Bush, and you'd have still a true statement.
