Subject pretty much says it all. I've been on a quest for the "perfect" laptop. For me, that would be:

1. Long battery life (3+ hours) which means it'll pretty much have to be a Pentium M
2. Dedicated video card, preferable something greater than a Radeon 7500
3. 15" LCD. Resolution doesn't matter as much as the size
4. Sub 6 lbs weight
5. Must have the optical drive built in to the computer
6. Something greather than a 20GB HD is prefered, although not a necessity

Just to give everybody an idea of what I've tried in the last 2 years:

Compaq 21xx series
HP Omnibook (that may have been longer than 2 years ago)
Dell Inspiron 600m (this was okay, but the screen was a little too small and the build quality is marginal)
Dell Insipron 8600 (everything I wanted except the weight!)
IBM Thinkpad R40 (a little bit on the underpowered side and a little but north of 6 lbs)

Seems like all the sub-6 lbs lappy are equipped with a 14" screen so I don't know if it's just physically impossible to put a 15" on a sub-6 notebook.

Anybody with suggestions?

Price?

Edit: The Gateway 450X might suit you. It's 1.13 lbs over 6, but it has a cd burner and 64 mb Radeon 9000 video.

Price at this point is no object. 1.3 lbs over 6 is quite a bit. You're getting up into Dell Inspiron 8600 territory (they claim 6.9 lbs for the laptop, but it feels heavier to me).

Just to add... my inspiron 8500 with a P4 M lasts lasts well over 3 hours.. So you can look into other options than the pentium M.... if you can find a 6 lb machine that is...

Dells weight claims are not inclusive of the optical drive....

Actually, gateway claims that their 15" sxga 450X is 6.13 pounds, which should be pretty close to your 6 pound limit

hmm
samsung has some nice looking laptops under 6 pounds, including a 15.4", but the USA isn't listed as one of the countries where you can get them.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm gonna take a look at the Travelmate. Also, if the Samsung is available in Japan, maybe I'll buy it there as I go there about 2 to 3 times a year.

My Compaq X1050 has Radeon 9200 1.5gig Centrino but it's 15.4 wide screen? Comes in at 6.6lbs, but in the early editions the DVD drive is removable brings it down to 5.9lbs I believe.

Another vote for the Travelmate. If you have questions about that system, I got one (802lci) and like it lots so far.

I have used Dell Inspirons D800 - similar I think to the Inspiron 8600 probably. They are awesome! Are you worried about the extra 1lbs? It worth it!
