Does a good 22 inch 8-bit monitor exist?

I'm going to be upgrading soon, switching out my ancient 19'' Viewsonic CRT monitor for something a bit more sleek and recent. I was thinking about going for a new monitor somewhere between 22-24 inches, which definitely has to be widescreen. So I was wondering-does a good true 8-bit 22-inch WS monitor exist? I know that most screens in the 22 inch market are merely rebranded Chi Mei panels which uses 6 bit+FRC.

If not, what's a good 8 bit 24 inch monitor? I was leaning towards the Dell Ultrasharp 2407FPW (A02 revision or later of course) monitor.

You should consider LG L226WTY-BF, I tried finding the panel details but couldn't. It has very impressive specs, 170 degrees both horizontal and vertical viewing angels, 3000:1 contrast and 2ms response time. I'm 99.9% sure this is not some cheap panel like in 22" Viewsonics VX series or similar.

Seems it's now a panel lottery with the 2407FPW, some are the really good S-IPS panels, and some are absolutely terrible.

Why do you need 8-bit anyway? I mean, lots of people can't tell the difference, can you tell which panel is which without being told?

Call me a purist-I think after 10+ years of this CRT (which has really terrible color issues, especially with blacks/whites), I just want the best. If theres no huge difference and no real problems (bleeding, etc), I'll be happy to go with a good 6-bit 22/24 inch monitor.

Any suggestions? Here is the list I'm currently looking at. I know the cheaper end models probably have dead pixel issues/non-adjustable stands/light bleeding, but the higher end ones seem nice. Too bad its a freakin' lottery with Samsung and Dell.

All 22" LCDs are going to be 6-bit. No one is making an 8-bit panel of that size AFAIK.

Go HERE and select all of the 22" models and then click "compare" at the bottom.

At this point, all 22" panels are TN and are 6 bit.

As a note, the resolution on a 22" widescreen is almost always the same as resolutions on 20" widescreen LCDs. Do you need resolution or actual screen real estate? If you're just in for the resolution, a 20" choice would give you a lot more 8-bit options.

I'm in it for the actual real-estate, not just the resolution. Alright that settles it-I'm going for a good 24 inch. I'll even gamble on the Dell if I have to (can anyone tell me if they do exchanges if I get a first edition "A0" model?)

24" is best for real estate, 1920x1200 is just right resolution that lets you use multiple apps side-by side.

Some of 8-bit 24" can be found under $600.

If you can afford it, and have good hardware to game at this resolution (if you game), then go for 24.

Eschew the 22"ers. All of them, as there is no such thing as a good 22".
Okay, sure, but there's no way i'd classify a TN as good.

24" is indeed what you want.
No need for a Dell lottery either.
Either get the new 2407-HC, or get the LG 246/245, which can be found at local shops, meaning a nice return policy in case of dead pixels, etc.

Thanks for the help guys-I've decided to get the Westinghouse LCM-22w2 22-inch WS monitor. It got good reviews, and although it suffers from some minor blemishes in the greyscale area, from what I've read, tweaking the RGB scale a bit and downloading the latest profile should fix it. One of the things that won me over about this particular monitor was the number of A/V ports-this way, when I head back to college next fall I don't have to lug back my tiny old tv to plug in my game consoles to, but can instead, just simply plug it into this sleek monitor.

If any of you personally have the Westinghouse, I would really appreciate your personal experience and feedback. Also, please feel free to tell me if I've overlooked something, etc. I wonder who manufactures the panel (I'm hoping not Chi Mei). Thanks for the help guys!
