Does a GTX 295 work on a AMD 790FX board?

Hello,

I built a PC a wile back w/ a Phenom II X4, Asus 790FX motherboard and a Asus 4890 video card. Lately the video card has seemed to be going bad. The more time I am playing a game, the worse the graphics get. I am looking to replace the video card and I was looking at the Nvidia GTX 295. I know it has 2 GPU's in it and the reviews I saw said it does the SLI "internally", but i'm wondering if it would work on a AMD chipset motherboard? All the sites I see never say it requires a Nvidia board only except when pairing it with another card. But still wondering cause of the two chips on the single PCB......

Thanks!

GTX295 does not require an SLI capable motherboard. The 790FX would be just fine.

there's nothing preventing you from running a gtx295 on a 790fx. a 4890 crossfire would probably be a more judicious use of your money, though.

what's wrong with your original 4890 exactly? is it out of warranty?

Thanks for the reply. Its not that its out of warranty. After 3-4 months, the image quality has gotten very bad. Combine that with ASUS recently redesigning the card makes me think it was flawed some how from the beginning. I play FFXI a lot and I hear overall Nvidia cards run a lot better w/ the game then ATI cards. So figured I'd switch.

You should at least try warrantying it. No point in spending the money for a card now when next gen is coming out soon, as well.

Soon? As in everybody is crossing their fingers to have them here by Christmas soon?

At the very least the ATI cards should be here by early October, and the nV cards will follow in a couple of months and maybe even earlier (nV could pull up the launch to steal some of ATI's thunder). I'd say that's pretty soon.

You'd say that's pretty soon and anyway, that's best case scenario. But is that soon enough for the OP? Why don't we ask him...

OP?

i was curious what the heck he meant, too.

people with defective gpu's usually don't compain about 'image quality,' they say 'there's big damn glitches on my screen.'

It was just bolding quality as its a very vague term.

Its like calling a woman bad. It could mean that she turns without signaling or it could mean she's a dirty tramp that's going to steal your money.

Yeah and throwing ~$200 in the garbage and than spending another $500 is not my idea of a steal!

Techno RMA the card to Asus and save your money.

yeah i would 1st explore other options like RMA the card.

You could buy another 4890 and use both cards in xfire. Put the newer one as your display card and maybe, just maybe your problems might go away since image quality as you put it it's the main issue.

Just an a idea, someone please comment if that would work.

I would try to RMA the 4890 myself. Just not sure if the OP just wanted to change brands for the games he plays, or wanted a faster card to begin with. And, if there is something wrong with the card, I'm not so sure I'd be comfortable using it as the second card in an Xfire config with a new 4890 in the primary. I'd always feel something was not right, even if it was perfect. Mentally imagining shortcomings.

If you mainly play FFXI, just RMA the card, maybe even sell it to someone and just get something cheaper like an HD4670.

FFXI doesn't touch your GPU (for the most part) anyways, it's pretty much a complete waste of money to go with anything super high end for the purposes of FFXI. Nvidia's not much better, though, they had a driver line that was entirely crap regarding the game--8800GT's were doing like 10 FPS until they fixed it in most of the newer drivers. My ATI cards seem to do fine on it, though, have since the 8.3 cat's or so (which is when I got them so I can't speak about before that).
