OP the graphics side of the PS4/Xbox One is a decent unit, more powerful than any desktop solution so far.

Uhm, no. No where near the performance of a GTX 780 Ti or R9 290X. But consoles live in a different world, so they don't need that much performance. In terms of writing gaming software, they are closer to an RTOS with low level hardware access, than they are to developing games on a Windows PC.

he probably was talking about desktop apus in general and not dgpu...

' iBuyPower Unveils Steam Machine For $499 ... The machine, pictured above, will feature an AMD chipset and will sport an AMD Radeon R9'

So a small builder can create a custom AMD PC with R9 graphics for price of Xbox One, then BIG BUILDERS can price their Custom AMD Steam with R9 graphics boxes close to PS4 at $399? :awe:

The only company that is capable of releasing a 399 Steam Box for with those specs is Valve themselves. They can sell hardware at a breakeven or loss much like MS is doing with the Xbone, just to cash in on Licensing and Controller sales. Or Valve may choose to just take a loss all togather in hopes of driving steam OS's adoption.

Xbox One GPU is impressive, although the PS4 is more impressive due to the DDR5 memory.

I was curious on this topic - where does the new XBox One / PS4 GPU land vs a PC GPU.

This gives a general idea.

Obviously the dedicated video card, not sharing system RAM, would be faster in absolute terms. The APU if it were operating at peak for more than a fraction of a second, would have the CPUs starved for memory.

However, the absolute capability of the XBox One APU vs a GTX 560 Ti is not far off.

Edit : Note the memory and pixel fill rates of the PS4 are about double that of the XBox One, making it very close to a 560Ti.

GTX 560 Ti
Memory Bandwidth: 128.256 GB/sec
FLOPS: 1262.592 GFLOPS
Pixel Fill Rate: 26304 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 52608 MTexels/sec

Xenos Xbox 360 GPU: 240 Gflops
Xbox One GPU: 1310 Gflops

Xenos Pixel fillrate: 4,000Mpix/s
Xbone Pixel fillrate: 13,648Mpix/s

Xenos Texel fillrate: 8,000Mtex/s
Xbone Texel fillrate: 40,944Mtex/s

I recognise this haha I stumbled across this page despite virtually never visiting the site from google, have no idea how I actually got here, and recognise I wrote exactly this a week ago elsewhere. Amazed it got copy pasted here lol

PS4 = 7850 with a small OC
Xbox One = 7770ghz with a poorer pixel fillrate.

7770 has GDDR5 but only a 128bit bus, Xbox one has DDR3 but twice the bus width at 256bit. Which means it has similar memory bandwidth, discounting the ESRAM which probably helps it a fair bit.

Again you can get ever more complex, which says that Xbox One still has to share some memory bandwidth for its CPU, taking a bit off the total. PS4 does as well, allegedly as much as 20GB/s which incidentally still means whatever is left available would be similar to what a stock Radeon 7850 has.....

The caveat there is that real 7790 has fast gddr5. XB1 is closer to 7750 after you penalize for ddr3.

the Xbox one uses 256bit DDR3, the 7790 128bit GDDR5...

so it looks like 7790 = 96GB/s, XboxOne = 68GB/s + esram (100GB/s or more),

but also comparing the rest, the 7790 have 896 sps at 1GHz, the Xbox 768 at 0.85GHz... if it was running on a PC environment I think the Xbox One GPU would be between the 7790 and 7770 (perhaps closer to the 7770)....

Steammachines are PCs with regular PC components.

The initial prototypes had Intel cpus and nVidia gpus. I assume there will be amd cpus, apus and gpus. I am not sure what the advantage is over a real sff PC though, unless they sell them cheaper, which I doubt. Since you can run steam os on a pc it seems to me you are giving up the advantages of a PC for no real gain.

There is none. Thats the key point of SteamOS.

Its simply PCs in a fancy or not chassis with a SteamOS controller. The iBUYPOWER Steam Machines is nothing more than a regular AMD CPU+GPU in a fancy box.

Looking on Microsofts roadmap with the next Windows coming in spring 2015 codename Threshold. And their wish to push Windows Phones and Windows closer. I have a positive feeling about SteamOS.

And now Intel/Google joined the onsault on Windows.

steam os frees up margins that would usually be allocated to a windows license back to oem/SI/consumers hands.
