Does AMR work well for a 56k modem?

How are ping times and connect rates on an AMR modem?

I don't give a crap about the CPU time used, so don't bring up that point. I've just never seen an AMR modem in use before....

There are some WinModems (Lucent) that have excellent ping times...how are hte ping times on an AMR modem? (Asus K7M motherboard, so Via 686A southbridge).

My choices are AMR or external (USB probably...), as I have 5/5 PCI slots loaded up. And I think AMR would be the cheaper of the two.

I have an amr modem in one of my systems and it sucks!!!!! I was never able to keep the connection, just kept getting kicked off about as fast (or slow) as I got on. Of course, maybe the brand matters, but before I upgraded that thing I just got a U.S. Robotics modem instead and stay connected.

You say that you don't care about the CPU time used but it is very important when you are talking about gaming. Your CPU is being pushed to the max in a game like Quake and cannot fully concentrate on processing the data through the AMR slot. Your pings, as with all winmodems, won't be very good.
