Is it really worth getting an active PFC PSU to save on electricty costs for a file server running 24/7? Other than Seasonic, who else carries active PFC PSUs in the U.S.?
This is one of the better Power Supply writeups I have seen... I would read the entire article, but I've linked to the page that answers the question you are asking.
Thomas Edison publicly electrocuted animals with Tesla's alternating current in order to promote his own direct current scheme. I hope that answers your question. :Q
If you live in a residential area APFC won't save you a dime because of apparent vs. real power.
That doesn?t mean it's not worth looking for however since it is a feature that should be found on high-end units. From a design perspective building a PSU with APFC in mind allows you build a better (slightly) more efficient unit, Seasonic would be an example.
I have a Seasonic on my wife's computer at her office. For the file server, I am using an older Silverstone 400w (ST400) non active-PFC. The file server will be running 24/7. Electricity cost $.097 per KWH here in Vegas.
