Does an active PFC PSU really save on the cost of electricty?

Is it really worth getting an active PFC PSU to save on electricty costs for a file server running 24/7? Other than Seasonic, who else carries active PFC PSUs in the U.S.?

If there is any truth in Active PFC it's the fact that it has better voltage regulation and is closer to truth in advertising its wattage rating!

Active PFC will reduce your electricity bill a little.

BtW: Antec also carry PSUs with active PFC.

If you live in a residential area APFC won't save you a dime because of apparent vs. real power.

That doesn?t mean it's not worth looking for however since it is a feature that should be found on high-end units. From a design perspective building a PSU with APFC in mind allows you build a better (slightly) more efficient unit, Seasonic would be an example.

I have a Seasonic on my wife's computer at her office. For the file server, I am using an older Silverstone 400w (ST400) non active-PFC. The file server will be running 24/7. Electricity cost $.097 per KWH here in Vegas.
