Does any retailer sell the Kenwood 72x?

And those you taunt will in return be taunting you about how their drives are significantly more reliable, not to mention the Kenwood 72X drivers were rather picky about the CD media used w/them.

The 72X drives did not have high failure rates.

The Kenwood drive with the problems was the 40X trueX drive, it was actually sold under the Hi-Val name. People who had bad drives were offered Kenwood 52X trueX drives as replacements. They were the second genereation and less problematic. The last two drives from Kenwood were the 62X and the 72X. These models appeared around the same time and nothing has since come even close to their performance in pressed media. Being the third generation, most of the problems were sorted-out at the time of their demise. However, as Rand mentioned, their performance with cdr media can be spotty (like any other drive!)

I own a 72X and have used it with Win 98 and now Win 2k. People not closely familiar with the drive like to pick on it sometimes, but that's ok. They are the ones that are worrying that their cd/dvd drives aren't fast enough for disk to disk copies with the new burners

I had the Kenwood 72x, it repeatedly failed and the last one I got I just threw in my mom's PC and got myself something decent. It was very fast some of the time, but the drive just had problems reading some discs and had a very short life span. Luckily for my mom, the 72x in her PC has lasted for over half a year...

I've got two of these drives, one in each of my systems. After two years of somewhat heavy use, no problems. They have been very reliable for me; fast and extremely quiet! These were the only drives that I could find that could provide me with consistently reliable on-the-fly 8x burns to each of my CDRW burners with perfect DAE at 40x. No problems reading any CD-R's that I've burned...too bad they were discontinued, you might try ebay...

You can definitely call me lucky, each of these systems also has an IBM 75 GXP 46 GB HD, and after two years of very heavy use, no problems here either...knockin' on wood...

Kenwood 72X no problems had it since they came out. IBM 45gb 75GXP no problems, bought it at release.



Ebay was a good idea too. There are several for sale right now.
You can't say that these drives don't have a small cult following. Bidding is up to $110with 2 days left! Wow, completed for $150.
