I don't know what possessed me to even try riding in when we had about an inch or two of snow. I had slicks on my bike also! WHAT a joke?! I walked most of the way to work actually but on the way back it had mostly melted so it made getting home quicker

It's very refreshing to cycle to work after driving an hr each way of motorways for 15months!

I am thinking of purchasing a cruiser and just biking to work... mainly for the gas savings (I drive a G35c, which isn't the most gas efficient vehicle around) and fitness aspects of it. And since this time around I won't have to wear a suit and tie it seems very doable.

Am curious if anybody has done this and if it's one of those things that's easier said than done?

Thanks!

Me too

I'll pass..

Are you kidding? I get a great workout in every day I ride in. I push hard for 10 solid miles each way and I did that 4 days in a row last week...that's 80 miles of commuting. I love getting sweaty before work. Of course, I can shower at work so I smell better than everyone else there.

BTW-There's nothing more satisfying than passing a mile long line of cagers stuck sitting in traffic on your bicycle never to see them again. Some days I think it takes me less time to ride my bike than it would to drive.

3 miles is nothing. You can do it on a mountain bike too and not even break a sweat.
I commute 9 miles each way on a mountain bike, but I may get a road bike soon.

You should. You'll be amazed at the difference. It's like going from a Ford Bronco to a Ferrari.

Did you read bikeforums.net commuting section I linked in my post above?

1. There should be alternative ways. Think differently, you don't have to ride on same roads as you do in the car. Keep in mind bike goes in many places where a car can't. You can cut the way through parks, smaller streets, etc.

2. There are rules for safe riding on the roads, off top of my head:
-ride the middle of the lane, never "hug" the curb - you will get sideswept by cars
-keep distance from parked cars, so you don't crash in a door that someone will open infront of you
-ride with traffic
-use hand signals, obey all traffic rules just like a car
-have helmet and lights

check out bikeforums.net and this site: http://bicyclesafe.com/

RIDE ON!

Here's a good one few people seem to follow. When there's a nice bike trail that follows along the road or gets you to where you need to go... USE IT! There's no need to bike in the middle of the road when there's a nice pretty bike trail with no cars on it.

A lot of highways near me have bike trails about 10-20 feet off to the side, yet I see people biking in the center of lanes all the time anyhow.....

How is the traffic on the path? It may not have cars on it, but that doesn't do much good for speedy travel if it's clogged with walkers, joggers, skaters, etc. If the path is popular for morning exercise, it makes a pretty terrible commute route.

I bike to work in the spring/summer a few times a week when I know i'm not going to need to drive anywhere during the day. It's ~8 miles each way and I get pretty sweaty so i always shower at work when I get there. Best part is I can do it in just about the same time as driving because of traffic!

I wish I lived in a city. Biking in the city is so much fun. Its faster then driving, its faster then the subway, its cheap, and weaving in and out of cars as they are stuck is great fun. yeah I know its more dangerous but I honestly feel safer in the city then on the side of a road with 35 mile per hour traffic zooming by.

I bike to work all the time! 29 miles round trip, all in Manhattan and Brooklyn. A little wipe-down in the bathroom is sometimes helpful but usually not necessary in the morning to keep fresh.

I have been biking to work for the past 2.5 years. I have about a 16 mile round trip commute. I started out on a MTB but bought a road bike within a few months and the change was dramatic. The road bike is so much faster it's not even funny. Last week the temps were in the 70s in the morning with lots of humidity. I do not have a shower at work so I just cool down and then wash my face/upper body with a wash cloth. I work in an office with 2-3 other people and we rarely have meetings here with clients. I have already ridden over 1400 miles this year so far and my goal is to hit over 3000 for the year.

I rode about 2500 miles last year and am on course to do over 3000 this year. I'm also planning on doing a couple of centurys this year as well. I did my first one last September.

Road bikes are sweet. I have two of them and I alternate between them both.

What is your other road bike, Jules? Some day I will buy myself a pimp road bike, for like....$1500
I currently ride vintage Schwinn Worldsport I got dirt cheap on garage sale.

Yesterday evening I took my bike for last ride in 2 months to come (leaving it in Houston, going to Cali) - I was just relaxing, going slow, rarely pedaling. Speedo showned 13-19 mph. There was this man on an MTB and as he tried to get away from me I could feel his pain He was pedaling hard while I was cruising real easy...I finally let him break away from me.

I do it every day. Thankfully mass ave, has a bike lane. then i just go down one of the side streets to the hancock tower.

My ride is about 2 miles each way. I am doing it on a Mongoose Switchback mountain bike.

I live in Cambridge and used to ride to downtown crossing when I used to work there. Though a short ride, it definitely wasn't boring. A car cutting you off or not signaling. People walking right in front of you or someone opening a door on you. Getting punched in the face after yelling at someone for cutting me off in their car.

Good times, I miss them.
