I used to bike to work, but I really hated being all sweaty when I got there; and it was a pain when it snowed.

Got a new gig... it's about 3 miles away from my home !!!!
I am thinking of purchasing a cruiser and just biking to work... mainly for the gas savings (I drive a G35c, which isn't the most gas efficient vehicle around) and fitness aspects of it. And since this time around I won't have to wear a suit and tie it seems very doable.
Am curious if anybody has done this and if it's one of those things that's easier said than done?
Thanks!

3 miles is nothing. You can do it on a mountain bike too and not even break a sweat.
I commute 9 miles each way on a mountain bike, but I may get a road bike soon.

Keep the posts coming, as I am thinking of doing the same. I am a bit leery of biking into downtown Boston though, don't want to be road kill.
Did you read bikeforums.net commuting section I linked in my post above?
1. There should be alternative ways. Think differently, you don't have to ride on same roads as you do in the car. Keep in mind bike goes in many places where a car can't. You can cut the way through parks, smaller streets, etc.
2. There are rules for safe riding on the roads, off top of my head:
-ride the middle of the lane, never "hug" the curb - you will get sideswept by cars
-keep distance from parked cars, so you don't crash in a door that someone will open infront of you
-ride with traffic
-use hand signals, obey all traffic rules just like a car
-have helmet and lights
check out bikeforums.net and this site: http://bicyclesafe.com/
RIDE ON!
How is the traffic on the path? It may not have cars on it, but that doesn't do much good for speedy travel if it's clogged with walkers, joggers, skaters, etc. If the path is popular for morning exercise, it makes a pretty terrible commute route.Originally posted by: wetcat007
Here's a good one few people seem to follow. When there's a nice bike trail that follows along the road or gets you to where you need to go... USE IT! There's no need to bike in the middle of the road when there's a nice pretty bike trail with no cars on it.
A lot of highways near me have bike trails about 10-20 feet off to the side, yet I see people biking in the center of lanes all the time anyhow.....

I have been biking to work for the past 2.5 years. I have about a 16 mile round trip commute. I started out on a MTB but bought a road bike within a few months and the change was dramatic. The road bike is so much faster it's not even funny. Last week the temps were in the 70s in the morning with lots of humidity. I do not have a shower at work so I just cool down and then wash my face/upper body with a wash cloth. I work in an office with 2-3 other people and we rarely have meetings here with clients. I have already ridden over 1400 miles this year so far and my goal is to hit over 3000 for the year.

What is your other road bike, Jules? Some day I will buy myself a pimp road bike, for like....$1500
I currently ride vintage Schwinn Worldsport I got dirt cheap on garage sale.
Yesterday evening I took my bike for last ride in 2 months to come (leaving it in Houston, going to Cali) - I was just relaxing, going slow, rarely pedaling. Speedo showned 13-19 mph. There was this man on an MTB and as he tried to get away from me I could feel his pain He was pedaling hard while I was cruising real easy...I finally let him break away from me.
