Does anybody buy computer parts locally?

When i was at one of the two local computer stores I was really suprised how OVer priced the stuff was. The girl at the counter actually told me that 240.00 plus tax was a good price for the A8n-sli Deluxe. When i asked her if she knew what new egg was she was like duh is that a local store

O the Giabyte 6200 was 129 retail box
the 6600 139 retail box.

So tell me what if any thing you buy locally.

I understand a store needs make a profit ....

frys has a lot of good deals... i dont know where your from...

theres also a semi local computer shop that i cant remember the name of that used to have pretty good deals...

but your right most local places dont have good prices at all... they dont buy in bulk... and as you said they need profit...

Around last x-mas, Newegg and CompUSA had similar prices for 9800pros. When mine was artifacting I picked one up from CompUSA instead of waiting for the xmas holiday + RMA time.

I buy pretty much everything locally. I live in Toronto, Canada. These are the two places I purchase from.

Check their prices, remember they're in canadian dollars. So just divide that by 1.35. They have their stuff closely matched to newegg.com

But mind you, these places are a nofrills type of place. You go in and their place is not renovated. There is at most three guys in there. You tell them what you want, pay and leave. If you pay a $30 dollar fee they'll put together everything for you. But they do not optimize your computer by any means nor will they advise you on anything.

Fry's and Best Buy are the only two brick-and-mortar stores from which I would buy. I like online better, though. Pricegrabber, Pricewatch, Froogle, and Techbargains always find great prices. Then I just pick the most reliable online merchant while still getting a very competitive price. Easy.

Nope, no local stores for me...I always buy online. While I'm always open to finding a bargain on ebay, the place I typically buy from is newegg.com. I know that other places occasionally will have slightly better prices on individual items, but I like newegg's fast shipping, fair S&H charges, and I also tend to buy upgrades in groups of components, and it usually works out that buying everything from newegg is cheaper than buying the individual components from the different retailers who offer the lowest price on each (or buying all of the components from someone other than newegg)

its simply not possible for retail stores to consistantly beat the prices of online retailers, there is too much overheard. your paying for the convience of having it right now.

I am forced to buy from local brick-and-mortar stores. Newegg just won't ship to Asia.

i buy online, for what it costs to ship, i would end up just spending it on gas, so it evens out

In the past local stores offered better product knowledge and that would mke up for higher cost but that in many cases now is not true. Or as the case here is the tech at the local assumes he is talking to somebody woth zero computer knowlwdge and has a bad attitude.
Locally we dont have Fry here just office depot, office max, best buy and curcuit city.

All online, even with the steep shipping fees it's still far cheaper and a more pleasant experience. Local shops here (no fry's or the like) are run by morons who think they know everything and have zero customer service skills. They treat customers as if they are doing them a favor by being in business.

when I used to live in san diego I would go to fry's a lot. they had a lot of good specials. I still order online from them. their shipping prices are much better than newegg.com but they don't have as good a selection. occasionaly, staples, best buy, or circuit city will have some specials that I will take advantage of but in general I mostly shop at newegg.com and outpost.com.

I have Fry's, Best Buy, and Monarch Computers within an hour of me. I also have a store called Micro Center very close to me. Micro Center doesn't have to many deals on high end stuff but If I ever need a floppy/dvd/cd drive or anything small I go there.

I interned at a Musuem for a few months in the IT department and when somone needed something I was the person who had to make the drive and get it. Wile I was at the local store I would check some prices and most of the time they were $50 more than Newegg or ZZF. All online here. www.frozencpu.com is local for me. There prices aren't too bad as long as you go pick it up. They kill you on shipping.

With 2nd day shipping my A8nsli was 180.00 the local cost is 240.00 plus sales tax. Then they actually tried to convince me it was a good price that was what made me mad.
If you think about it with 2nd day shipping newegg is local

Best Buy in general, is a rip off.

Actually, the local stores in canada are pretty fair priced. When you convert newegg prices to the ones in canada, they're about 5 dollars difference, so no big deal. The only exception would be RAM (like 20 dDollars more expensive here). Certain motherboards like the EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra is more expensive, but that's because it's kind of a special order. So far i'm local, but when newegg.ca comes around, it should be all online for me

I buy some parts locally. There are a couple of shops whose prices are comparable to online prices. And sometimes I like having instant gratification.

If I gotta have something right now will buy at brick store occasionally but thier prices, selection, and return policies are horrible.
Buy most of my stuff online.
