I am just wonderin cause on my 750 athlon with 128 mb ram and good 7200 rpm hd, my hd still gets hit once in a while. However, this only occurs in the very beginning of say quake 3 or somtheing. every thing seems to smooth out after about a minute. Would adding another 128 mb stick eliminate this problem. i already have a 300 meg swapfile and optimized my hd.

It's funny that people think that they can fix these things just by spending more money. HD accessing is something that's always going to happen. The only way to eliminate it would be to buy 1GB of memory, and then run your games off a RAM drive

That 300MB swapfile doesn't do sh|t for speeding up texture downloads, since it's on your HD

Sudheer, you could reduce the disk access in 2 ways:

1) Add a Gig of RAM

2) Turn off TC. Q3 compresses textures as a map loads. Besides, with your GTS, it looks like horrid ass anyway.

I don't honestly notice the same issues as yourself. I believe that another stick of 128MB of SDRAM will help ya. Dunno if the extra expense is worth it though. That's another issue.

If you're in Win98, you can enable "DMA" in the Device Manager for the harddrive, which will smooth out your accessed texture renderings. Also, try experimenting with different AGP settings in the BIOS if the DMA is already activated, as well as the Graphics Aperature Size.

Just the usual $0.02.

Q3A Rarely touches the drive when I play (128MB Ram)
UT is bad for it though... every area I walk into chugs for a bit.
1GB of RAM isn't a bad thing

I have a Celeron 500, Win 98, 192 MB RAM, V3 2000 PCI and I never get any disk swapping during play. I get a slight stutter in Q3 after entering a map for about 1 second when the announcer's voice first kicks in, but after that everything is smooth.

You should probably get a 64 MB or a 128 MB DIMM. Most 3D games use about 60-120 MB of RAM so 128 MB really just doesn't cut it anymore.

I have 128MB of PC100@133. Quake3 is always silky @ HQ mode on a TNT2U and P3-600 (oc/ed 450). I just don't have anything run in the background.

MP3s tend to make it "lag" a bit, noticable enough for me.
