Perhaps in this case but everything else Microsoft keeps safe with lock and key, unless you want to pay them $$ to see parts of their source code to see how certain protocols communicate with the OS. The is part of MS's new policy due to the antitrust suit, they will show parts of their source code to developers if you give them cash and sign your life away with their user agreement.Originally posted by: singh
Real is a lot worse than MS. I can design my own player to play WMV's and ASF's by using MS's components. Can I do the same with Real? NO!Originally posted by: jjsole So you prefer that they use a standardized protocol and that they should leave it open to everyone? Then boycott microsoft, they are a much worse offender.

I hate fighting over file associations, having a player that has banner ads, having a bunch of bloatware that makes just playing a file an endeavor. Stupid icons in the taskbar, blah blah.
Honestly I can't stand: Real, MS Media Player, Quicktime and yes even the latest version 3 of winamp has become bloated.
I'll never install Real. Period.

WHat's wrong with Quicktime besides the name?

MS is a worse company than Real. You all (ok most of you) look like self-righteous hypocrites.

The very first version of Real was alright (not great, but alright) every version since then has installed two system tray icons including one blinking annoyingly, taken over every media format, and made many shortcuts and installed itself in system startup.
